Blivens is a Crook!!
Here in CT, it seems that the squirrel population is very low in some areas (SE CT in particular) and good in some of the northern parts of the state. Now that the leaves are gone, and deer season is over, I have been using my .36 flint lock by Kevin Blivens. I like to slow stalk the woods if I see a squirrel, otherwise, I will take a stand for 30 minutes at a time to see what is moving. I also combine my squirrel hunts with predator calling. Lately, I have had more luck on coyotes than squirrels.

Well. My squirrel hunt for today had to be scratched. Guy coming to install a new garage door opener. tomorrow looks like a wash too. Weather man says Friday should be a GO. Went and got a fresh box of Kentucky Kernel just in case I'm lucky.

I will be going to Alafia River Rendezvous Friday.
Saturday taking Crockett Rifle out for some Squirrels. I too am craving fried Squirrel, with fried tators, and biscuits and squirrel gravy.
I will try Sunday also.
Boys if im successful with the Crockett Rifle, next weekend I will take my double barrel muzzleloading shotgun out with Ole Henry and get some...
I do have til March 3rd.....

Jim, I had forgotten all about those things. We had those where I lived out West up in the mountains in ID. One day I was quartering up an elk I just shot and I looked over and one of those things walked up to within a very few feet of me, stopped, and just looked at me. I wasn't sure what to do because I had never seen one before. He was going sort of back and forth, side to side in the snow. I tossed some scraps towards him and he grabbed some and then kind of slowly headed out. I couldn’t believe it was so brave. Haven't seen one since.
I trap fishers , they are a smaller version of a wolverine . They both have attitude hiking up on one in a trap they're not retreating their trying to chew you a new one , about that time you try remembering how deep I sunk that stake!!/Ed

Good deal Fred. Hopefully you'll find some caps for sale that won't make you stare in disbelief. Good luck on the hunt. Shoot straight and keep your powder dry.

Trap them all. They are good for nothing turkey killing SOB's. They kill just to kill. I read something recently where they are talking about reintroducing Martins here in PA. No bueno.

@ETipp your visitor was probably a Pine Martin. Don't think we have any fisher in the west but I could be wrong.

I see Pine Matins occasionally but not often. Their tracks in snow indicate that they are occasionally climbing trees after the Pine squirrels.

Yes indeed, that’s exactly what it was. My mistake, I thought that pic Jim posted was a pine Martin.

I’ve seen their tracks in fresh snow as well.

You would be , the photo says it all and I've skinned enough to know , not a pine martin /Ed

The only pine Martin I’ve ever seen was the one I described. It was up close but moving side to side. It was definitely wanting some of my elk scraps. After I tossed him some, he was on his way.

As many years I lived in the mountains of the NW, I find it interesting that I’ve only seen that one.
