Indeed. Looking at 103 days remaining here until spring squirrel season, but who’s counting?

Yesterday I saw a squirrel come out of a hole in a tree and attack another squirrel that had slipped his nose in there. Not sure if the defender was a female guarding her nest or perhaps she wasn’t ready yet. Don’t even know if it was a female defender. But whatever it was sure put that other squirrel down that tree in a hurry. I didn’t even know there was a den in that tree, which is only abut 35 yards out back of my house.

I also saw two squirrels go up to the top of another tree that has a drey up there. They both had something in their mouths and they both went inside.

My research shows there could be a couple reasons for both actions I saw. So, this ole boy is still trying to put all of this squirrel world stuff together. I do a lot of sitting and observing especially while recovering from this darn knee replacement issue.

Sometimes I sits, sometimes I thinks, and sometimes I just sits and thinks. 😁
Just when you think you have em figured out, they run across the road in time to make it, then turn around and run under the tire.

Key word, recovering. Soon enough it'll be recovered. Then just draw a fine bead with that Crockett and.........well, you know the rest.

Thanks for the encouragement, Tom, but at the rate I’m recovering, I might be able to make out just in time for the end of the 2026 squirrel season.

Slower than wet gun powder.

I know what you mean brother. I've been putting off getting mine done for way too long. I favor the one side so much, it's causing my hip to hurt. The hard parts over, you'll get there. Just use this time to search the net for a $h!t ton of squirrel recipes.

Sorry you didn’t score yesterday. At least you tried.
Thanks Ed.
Yes I tried and I’ll try again.
It was a nice day, I enjoy being in the woods.
Next time I’m going down towards the Withlacoochee River.
It been awhile since I’ve hunted down there.
It’s raining today, took a drive the the state forest, and back county roads. Seen 2 squirrels, and 1 big gobbler.
Ed, I know your hurting, limited on what you can do, I’m sure that bums ya out... We’re pull for a fast recovery for ya, hang in there, you’ll be hunt your favorite little critters, long before the end of 2026 season...

Take Care Stay Safe

Hope you do well at that other place, Fred.

Tom, I wish you well with your knee issue. I ran mine until it was done. And I do mean done. Perhaps mine is an unusual circumstance but as I see it, I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. But, as I have said, my knee was done so I had no choice.
However, I will win this fight. Hopefully by the time spring squirrel season arrives.

Something to think about on squirrel recipes for sure.

Well now l, just got back from seeing PA for the doctor. He said I’m doing great but need to work on extension. Impressed with my flexing, which I’ve been working very hard at. Said Im right where I need to be at this stage.

I might be able to get out and squirrel hunt soon. He said I need to stay off of concrete and pavement, he didn't say anything about the woods. :)

A little encouragement anyway.

That's real good news Ed! Play the Rocky soundtrack and get those exercises in. Only a tad bit over a hundred days left for you.

Went out this morning after my labs. Those ladies behind the counter wanted to carve my liver when I walked in in camo clothes. I told them I was here to give blood not draw it. They didn't like my joke. Weather man fibbed again. Was supposed to be mid 40's and sunny. Lies. It was 33 overcast and windy. I didn't get dressed up for nothing though. Walked/sat for a couple hours until the wind got bad and the window makers were falling. Went and sat in the truck and had some coffee and gnawed on some venison summer sausage. Still time left.

It’s tough this time of year for sure

It’s been very nice here the last few days. Close to 60*, light to no wind, and my squirrel meters out back have been teasing the heck out of me. But I have made a little good use of them. Been aiming my Crockett rife at them and practicing offhand holding.

Also, I have a new squirrel meter that I don’t recall being here. I found his den yesterday in tree on the other side of my garage. Can’t see it from the house but he’s been hanging out in the trees about 20 yards behind my house. He’s a young squirrel that must have been a late bloomer from last June.

Oh well, at least I get the satisfaction of watching them every day.

A little history here, Gunnery Sargent Carlos Hathcock, AKA White Feather, one of the most prolific snipers in US history attributes his skill to practicing holding his rifle still for hours. So you are on to something ED!

It was haircut day today, so to make small talk, my barber asked me what I did today and I told her I went squirrel hunting and froze my butt off one of the eavesdroppers cut in and said he doesn't squirrel hunt anymore. Then he goes on about the back legs are the only thing worth eating. He looked at me like I was crazy when I asked him why didn't he like squirrel backstraps 🤣 I shut him down when I told him my old man would of beat my a$$ if I wasted game meat like that. He was a younger fella, maybe he never had anyone reach him. Takes all kinds.

Well in terms of marksmanship, I couldn’t make a pimple on Hathcocks behind. But I can still try to improve.😁

Our season here in Indiana is now over but stay tuned for next season........I just recently retired!
With way more time, I intend to spend way more time chasing tree rats......one of my favorite pastimes.
Thank you Gentlemen for a fun thread.

I've shot a few Hoosier squirrels. Lived there for several years.

Congratulations Moleman on your retirement. I look forward to reading your adventures next season.

Well, woke up this morning and felt like 10 miles of bad road, throat felt like I swallowed a red hot razor blade. So I figured a trip to the woods was out. Sipped on pickle juice and honey tea. Started felling better about mid day. About 1:30 I noticed it was in the low 40"s, not much wind. Game on. Grabbed my kit and headed to some game land about 12 minutes from the house. It's thick woods and marsh. Thicker than Yack fur. Squirrels were moving. I was hoping to catch one or 2 getting to the den tree. I heard several scurrying around, but only caught flashes of them. It's that thick. Was a comfortable day out, so not a total bust. No fried squirrel and cornbread on the menu though. Microwave burritos it is.
