Well, squirrel season came back in today and the weather forecast didn’t look to bad so I went.

I was going to my new honey hole this morning. We got a little snow overnight and calm winds. I was really looking forward to the day.

I live in a ridge and valley area with four valleys separated by mountains. I have to drive down my valley to the river, go around the head of the mountain and up the next valley to a road that goes over the next mountain.

I’m going down that valley and I see flashing light and flairs ahead and a car turning around. Somebody ran off the road and hit an electric pole. I turn around and heading back find a school bus stopped with lights flashing but not the red lights. After awhile the guy in front of me walks up to the bus and talks to the driver. I find out from him that somebody hit another pole and power line s are across the road. I’m stuck between two of the same wrecks. I can’t believe it!!😡

I sit there for an hour and half listening to music and texting with Ed. ( Thanks Ed!).

Finally a guy held up the wires so we could get through.

Out to the river again, around the head of that mountain and up the other side. Get to my spot about 8:45. Get my stuff on, prime my pan and take off. Immediately I’m seeing lots of squirrel tracks and see a couple as I’m walking in the trail. As I cut down where I want to go I see two on the ground close. Sticks are on my back so I offhand it with my usual results.

Get to where I want to set up and saw two squirrels after quite awhile. No shot. Moved to another spot and sat. Nothing. By 11 the fog was rolling in so I left.

In the afternoon I hunted down valley from my place and didn’t see a squirrel. The fog rolled in there too.

Better days ahead I’m sure.
Rain, snow and fog here in Union county. Maybe tomorrow.

I would like to get after one of those Sikas one day. No meaning to be off topic. Just thinking out loud. And you say those are Delmarva Fox Squirrels? Are they only in that that area of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia?

Daytime
Yes. Ever since I started hunting down in Dorchester Co. in the late 70s I've seen them down there. They are 1/2 times bigger than a gray squirrel, have a lighter gray coat, and have whitish ear markings. They also have been protected since then.

You can apply for a permit to hunt Sikas at Blackwater Wildlife Refuge.

I only ever named one rifle. Called it "Little Fifty".

Others get Called names! Maybe if I were kinder they would be more cooperative?
I’ve never been one to name things, much. My sailboats, of course. Guitars, not so much. I was walking through the woods with my Crockett feeling all Crockett-y, when I realized that all the famous mountain men had names fer their rifles. Well, if it was good enough for the likes of David and Daniel….guess it needed to be good enough for me. Then I got to ponderin’ what I was gonna name my favorite small bore smoke pole. As I walked through the woods I got a little flummoxed. Not much coming to mind. I figgered it needed to be family, but the womenfolk in my life don’t really have rifle-esque names (too many syllables). Started running through the aunts, and it hit me. Little Ann. Named after my favorite aunt and a character from one of my favorite books when I was a youngin (still read it on occasion).
