3 band enfield reproduction, 58cal.Do i have to shoot .577 mimi's or can I shoot great plains .588 bullet ? They seem to be easier to find than .577. If not , where can I obtain .577 mimi's? thanks in advance for info.

I was given a box of Hornady Great Plains Maxi-Bullets and tried to load one into a unfired Zouave.
I got the bullet about half way down the bore by hand and had to drive it the rest of the way by pounding on my ramrod with a hammer.

Now, that's in my gun which is supposed to be a .580 caliber. I don't know how they will fit in yours, especially sense it is a .577 bore but in my opinion, you ought to be sure and take a nice hammer with you.

zonie :)

mmmmmmmmmmmm I bet the base didn't have to expand much

I use a .575 Minie in all my rifle-muskets--including my '53 Enfield . These guns do just fine
with a 560 grain Minie and 70 grains ffg. Accuracy and power are great and recoil is barely noticeable.

I use a mold and cast my own. You can buy these bullets or a mold from Track or Lyman. Rolling your own, if you shoot a lot, is the way to go.

have also found the minie bullets at dixie gunworks on line.

I have a PH two band Enfield .577 and shoot Great Plains in it all the time. It is tight, but the accuracy is very good. Lyman still makes a 566 grain Parker Hale original mold. My friend gave me a handfull of the bullets from his Lyman PH mold and they were accurate with charges up to 90 grains (Goex or Pyrodex did not matter). I have also found patched round ball to be accurate as well. I shoot both .570 RB with a cloth patch and .575 with rolling paper patches. Both are accurate. Anyways, that's my two bits.

I have a parker hale 2 band Enfield, I have used both the 570 ball and the 577 minis, yesterday I shot about 10 of each. I found the minis a little more accurate and easier to load, but the bore tends to require cleaning more often than with using the patch and ball.Whilst I am petty new to BP shooting, possibly there is a better type of lube that I could use to to stretch out the cleaning a bit longer than every 4 shots when using the 577 minis. I currently use 8 parts beeswax, 1 part lanolin and 1 part virgin olive oil.

If you are a target-shooter one option is using a "naked" minie-bullet dipped in "Break-Free" right before loading. I just now arrived from range after a shooting-session with my PH Enfield m.1858. Shot 20 minies without any cleaning this way and could have continued much longer. Just my 2c. :v
ARILAR
