Haven't posted here for a while but thought this may be of intrest to some. A couple years ago I decided to have my Crockett 32 Cal bored out to 40 CAL.When I got it back I seemed to not be able to get a good group.About 6 inch group at 50 yds was all I could squeeze out of it.So I put it on the rack for over a year. I got her down a couple weeks ago and started playing with it again. To make a long story short, yesterday I shot a 2 inch group at 50 yards. That was 8 shots into that group. If I count the one flier it would have been a 3 inch group. Needless to say,I'm very happy with that. I guess that firms up the saying never give up. It's there you just got to find that right combination . For me it was .395RB .020 patch, 35 grains fff. Olive oil lube. Just thought I would pass it along.

Good to hear that report. It's a good feeling when things come together. Well done!

I had a Traditions Crockett for a while in .32 . . I bet yours bored out to 40, doesn't weight much at all. It was pretty well balanced or not too heavy as is.

I got an old Dixie Cub rifle in 40 for my wife since all my other ML rifles are too big for her. (17 inch height difference.) It does best with a .400 ball and .10 or .15 thick patch. Don't know if all 40 calibers like tight loads but I've heard of several that do.

Congrats on the improved groups. I bet that lightened Crockett handles well.

Jeff

My experience has lead me to believe that fairly tight (not mallet tight) loads generally give better performance especially in holding down fouling buildup.

I have a .40 cal. and it likes a .395 ball and .015 pillow ticking, short starter for sure!.
