Can anyone give me a reference as to how flat shooting a .45 cal.T/C Hawkin over 50gr. fffg would be? How much rise and fall can one expect at say 50 yards?

For a 45 with fifty grains you should not have to worry about arch at fifty yards. Just sight it in at fifty and you will be good to go. At any range less, you will be off by no more than the height of your front sight to the center of your bore. :hmm:

I'm going to assume you are asking about a patched roundball?

That's important because a slug will be traveling slower to the answer would be different.

The Lyman BLACK POWDER HANDBOOK AND LOADING MANUAL, 2nd ed. says a 50 grain load of 3Fg Goex will give a patched .440 diameter ball a muzzle velocity of 1589 ft/sec.

Now for the "rise and fall" part I will assume you are going to sight in the gun for 50 yards.

There's also the matter of the fact that the sights are above the center of the bore. That means when the gun fires, the ball will look like it is low when compared with the line of view thru the sights.
The ball will climb to a point above the line of sight and then begin to fall back down to the line of sight.

I'll use a distance of .800 for this "height of sights" number.

Using the trajectory calculator I have on my computer it says:

5 yards = -.50
10 yards = -.30
20 yards = .10
30 yards = .30
40 yards = .30
50 yards = 0.00
60 yards = -.60
70 yards = -1.50
80 yards = -2.80
90 yards = -4.50
100 yards = -6.60

There are variables such as sight height and actual velocity, but my tc .45 with 45 grains runs about 1500fps. It is sighted dead on at 25 yards and about 1.5 high at 50 yards. Don't shoot it much at 100, but itseems to drop around 4.5".

Yes I was thinking round ball, and your dead on about the zeroing to 50yards but my problem is my lil backyard range is only 30yards and the closest rifle range that isn't a club that requires a membership is 2 hrs. away so I'm trying to get zeroed in the best way I can. thank you.

Many rural land owners will welcome you and let you shoot, especially when you show them what you have. ( muzzleloaders )
And also let them know that you will pick up after yourself.
None of them want the blast from an AK47, or an
M60 rattling off, 20 or 30 rounds in a second.
As well as, if you do a little property surveillance for them.
Also a little reward of their favorite libation is always well received.
I have welcomed many people on my properties with those intentions in hand.
Try it! Some will say no, but still thank them, but others will say yes. Especially if you identify yourself and your good intent.
