I thinks that's how you keep the sport alive and growing. Lets face it, all things black powder muzzleloading have be done, it's a dead topic of discussion. I've said this before, but you might as well lock the whole forum down and make it a read only site since there is no need to talk about topics that have been covered.

I just don't understand why it bothers so many people. Can people just not skip the 130th post on how to remove a stuck ball ? Or just ignore someone who posts they got better groups with a tighter patch ? I enjoy reading new members posts asking the basics and getting excited for the sport. Not to long ago that was me and a lot of patient people help me along the way.

Final thought, If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there , does a muzzleloader shooter still get annoyed ? ;)

Just about anything wet works.
Have you noticed anything that shoots more accurately than others or makes cleanup easier? Do you attribute your success to demonic intervention?

I’ve tried different things and can’t really see any difference. I of course will try this also.

I’ve used Simple green for years, Murfe’s for a good while before. Why not Dawn they are all soaps? Simple and Murfs were good for the abusive environment of youth field day shoots. Lots of volume shooting minimal cleaning between groups of kids. Upwards of 100 shots per gun. Little fuss or bother. BJH

plain old spit works fine for many match shooters. Worked fine for 50 years, why would I switch?
Why!?!? Spit patch works phenomenally well for target. Tallow works for hunting (be it TOTW Mink Oil/Crisco/Bear fat/whatever ). Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Spit for target/woodswalk. Some sort of grease/tallow for the hunt.

@zimmerstutzen I'm agreeing with you by the way, spit for target is superior to these alchemist formulas.

From what I've read, saliva changes when one becomes excited. The kind of excited associated with being on a date. More is produced and it is "slicker". Should I be taking a date to the range??????? Have I been missing out on something all these years???
Think I'll stick with soap and water. I can't afford any more alimony.

If you bring a date, can you bring one for me too?

Why the hell ya'll think the Mountain Men chewed terbaccy? Plenty spit to lube their patches. That's when they wasn't shovin' bare balls done their barrels to fight off them Blackfoots.
I’ve never used a spit patch to my memory because I’ve chewed tobacco for over 50 years and always when I’m shooting. Guess I never thought about them doing the same thing. One of these days I’ll try a tobacco spit patch. And Yes I know I should quit and that it’s bad for me. It’s what I do, and sip bourbon after shooting.

I've certainly used my share of spit lubed patches on the range. I like the mix of water soluble oil and water to dampen my patches. I still spit on my paper wrapped cartridges when shooting the King's Musket. I'll have to look at my bottle of Murphy's oil soap, but I would expect to find water as one of the ingredients.

Spit is great as long as you have enough for all the shooting you want to do.
Usually had a can or bottle of diet coke on the loading bench. Never ran out of spit, even with 50 shots in a day. For hunting, I would use bees wax mixed with microcrystalline wax.

I have been shooting black powder for forty plus years. I shot N-SSA competition with lubed minie balls, and small and large bore patched round balls in .32 to .62 rifles. I tried this 50:50 Dawn/Water mix for the first time this week. I got some vertical stringing, but only ten shots. I was quire surprised that I could shoot 5-10 load without swabbing (one damp, one dry) as I have always done. Accuracy (offhand) was consistent to my usual procedure, but I have not benched it for fine accuracy. The jury is still out until I can bench shots with both methods and over a chronograph. Interesting and needs more experiments.
