50 cal cap and ball

Just found out a new rule change in PA would permit cap and ball revolvers in the early muzzle loader season, but the minimum caliber would be 50. Long guns need to be a minimum of 44 caliber, so the Uberti revolver carbine is apparently legal now too.

I am not going to pay $500 for a ruger and another 500 to have it made into a 50. It is a shame no one makes a large caliber cap and ball for hunting. here is their chance to sell some. I would suggest to Pietta making aheavier frame remington style with a 5 shot cylinder. Chambers should hold at least 50 grains and a round ball. and of course minimum caliber of 50. Guess I will have to watch for one of those 50 caliber walkers that were made 30 yrs ago.

I thought PA was flintlock only state.

there is a week season in October for any muzzle loader and the two week season after Christmas is a flint only season.

I doubt that there is enough market for a .50 revolver to get a manufacturer interested. It is possible that the regs were written with an eye to exclude revolvers & that they could be expanded to include .50s if they ever became available in an off the shelf model. How about something like Jim Chambers .50 single shot with the 12" barrel?

I'm not aware of any .50 Walkers but an importer did have a run of .50 Dragoons made up in the late '70s or early '80s. I seem to remember it took a few years to sell all of them and I have never seen a used one up for sale.

I have seen two colt style 50's on gunbroker in the past five or six years. I am fairly certain the one I saw at a gun show 10 years ago, was a walker, (no loading arm catch.) Labeled 50. Most PA hunters are looking for an easy button way to increase their killing power. Thousands of unmentionables are sold here every fall just for our one week early season.

I already have a 12 inch single pistol. Many PA hunters will buy any weapon that legally gives them an edge during the season. Mr. White was interested enough in our state market to come and lobby our Game Commission to allow unmentionables. I would think a specific hunting revolver would have a market. We have 800,000 hunters here. if a quarter of one percent purchased that would be 2,000 units. Then add the guys across the country who just have to have an out of the ordinary gun.

Virginia, enacted a similar law. They allow 50 cal. pistol. However, it must be single shot, loaded from the muzzle and have at least 50 grains of powder.

It's geared more toward the inline pistols.

I have a 50 cal. CVA but would not want to shoot that stout of a load.

My intentions was to take the barrel, lock and trigger from a White Mountain Carbine to build a pistol. The WMC's had some 1:20 barrels, which is perfect for a pistol.

Anyway, I wound up cutting it into a Mare's Leg and it turned out to be something like a Canoe gun. It would be legal, but not as compact as a pistol. With 50 grains, it is very accurate and a lot of fun to shoot.

Clements charges well over $500 for that service. It's more like $1500 plus the pistol.

It's labeled a .50 cal but isn't one. I wonder if being labeled such is good enough. It's not as though game rangers walk around with calipers do they?

For that kind of money mine will stay .45 cal...

For 1500 I'd expect at least a .54.

Kidding aside, forty five years ago saw a gun magazine article about the .58 caliber Webley percussion revolvers. Wanted one ever since!

I think you've brought the idea of a reproduction a little closer to fruition now that you've identified a model to be recreated!

I'd be sure and recheck the PA law, it might be like the VA law, where a single shot, loaded from the muzzle.
