I have a pistol I made 50cal. 16" barrel 1-48" twist, I call it my Tenn Pistol. Will shoot 3 shots into one hole at 25yds with 40 grns FFG blue pillow tick, mink oil lube, but opens up to about 2" three shot group with 50grns, have never shot at 50yds yet.Don't have a chrono and was wandering about what the velocity would be with those loads.

I'd have to shoot it over a chronograph to be sure but I would think velocity would be around 1000 feet per second. Thats just a guess based on my oun experience.

At 30 yards its still got about 300 foot pounds of energy left maybe a little less.

Well what do you think max range on WT would be,20yds or do you think more.I killed a small 6 pt at roughly 110 yds with my 44 mag marlin it went down quick. I was thinking of using this gun as a back up, after the screw up I had this yr.

I shot 7 of my BP handguns over the chrono today. My Traditions 50 Trapper did 907fps with a .490 PRB and 30 grains of Swiss 3F. I only shot it once and it had been loaded a long time.
:)

A 16" barrel would be quite the backup gun.
Can you add something to that 40 grn charge?
I'm not that knowledgeable but I'd venture to guess you are good for big WT up to 25 yds easily and quite possibly more, and more for smaller southern deer.

Well I have tried 50 grns FFG ,hornady RB,pillow tick patch, mink oil lube and can get 2" groups at 25 yds sitting with elbos resting on knees, recoil is not bad at all with the wht of this gun, but I don't want to go over 50grns.
Will try 50yds as soon as I can, busy taking care of wife after her back surgery now.

Ya'll are in my prayers. Hope she gets well soon!

Other options would include trying 3F or even Triple 7 for higher velocity. You could also try some sort of conical. That is if you are looking to extend your range. How far are you hoping for?

2" is a good group.

I have an Old Army and bought 3F Triple 7 and some of Kaido's 240 grn conicals in the hopes that I can use it to hunt with. It ought to have more than enough steam out to 50 yds, but I'm finding myself still in need of more practice as I'm not getting good enough groups at 25 yds.

But I'm still getting acquainted with it and using RB with 2F/3F Pyrodex. After I get better with that then I'll work on adjusting the sights and using the conicals and T7.

Our deer are small, but the hogs can get big, which is one of the reasons I wanted heavy conicals with a big flat meplat.

Thanks for the prayers, she is slowly improving.
As far as the pistol,I am probly looking at 40 yds-50max.I guess i will stay with prb ,it should stay withen 5" at 50yds,but will try diff patch thickness& maybe FFFG BP.I will also try lapping the barrel.

Glad to hear that she is improving.

I'm curious why such a large pistol as a backup? Seems like it would be a primary hunting weapon.

I feel like my ROA with it's 7.5" barrel is just a little bit big for a backup. But it's what I'll be using for now.

I was hoping to be able to hunt with it, but I've yet to group well enough with it at 25 yds. Still new to me. I've only shot it 3-4 times, 5-7 cylinders each time. To be fair I've not been consistent with powder type or charge, and off hand and from a semi rest. I'm still getting used to it.

This pistol will only be used as a backup while in a tree stand, I couldn't carry it and a Hawken while still hunting.I would love to have a good C&B Revolver to carry. You are right I think I will use it some for primary weapon next yr.

Do you have experience with other hand guns,I shoot a variety of them from a 32 auto to a 44 mag.

Not a whole lot.

Had a Colt 380 Government for a very short while that I traded for an AMT Hardballer 1911 plus $100 and my accessories. I did well enough with it. Used mostly +P ammo and was able to keep them all in the black at 15 yds firing as fast as I possibly could. I had that for a while, but sold it. Then I had a Taurus Tracker 44 mag that I found I flinched with. I traded that for this Ruger Old Army. I found I still have that flinch, but am working with it. I do well when I relax and really concentrate on what I'm doing.

It was my father's but he sold it long ago.
I convinced my old boss to get one, and I'm not sure, but I believe he sold his too.
It was a great little gun!

I'm curious about your shortened rifle. I've looked at the .50 cal percussion pistols sold, but they all have small max loads (40-45 grns), and have wondered about shortening a side lock rifle to a 10-12" barrel to up the charge to 50-60 grns, something that I'd feel good about sending a PRB out to 50 yds for big hogs.

Mind posting a pic?

Keep in mind that a lot of commercially made .50 rifles have a 7/8" barrel, and they allow powder charges of typically 70-80 grns depending on the manufacturer, some even more. If you do cut one down to pistol length your concern wont be powder charge safety, it may be if the twist is fast enough to stabilize in the shorter barrel.
