Thanks for the replies. In my opinion, to shoot game as big this , MY gun isn't up for it. I want to shoot a gun that gives better line of sight penetration, I feel that would be rifled. .54 caliber isn't the problem; the smoothbore ball is veering off, in my opinion, because of the lack of rifling spin.A rifled gun would solve most of this...I don't want a shot-after-shot kill. I'm going to be on the ground with this beast, maybe a mile from help; I've been charged before. Here is the herd bull, a couple years ago.

later in the tests, I reversed the sequence, putting the carpet then the jug, then the 2x4. The results of the ball wanting to veer off were pretty much the same.

No trouble with whitetail up to 215 lbs dressed I have annoyed with mine.

It the early days of expansion a .54 Hawken with round ball was about as large a rifle as was carried. It accounted for many elk and buffalo in the hands of a patient and skilled hunter.

I'm not sure how far a Watusi can throw a spear so I'd practice past 50 yards. ;-)

When you go, try to film it. If you shoot and the thing drops like a ton of bricks . . . we will all want to see.

PS If you shoot, the ball bounces off his butt and he comes over and uses that damn big horn to drag you through half a mile of Texas scrub . . . The whole damn world will want to watch!! :rotf:

I shot this large WT (46"+ chest girth, so 300#) at about 25 yards as it walked by. I purposely shot into the shoulder for a stop ASAP. The ball did not exit, and was just under the hide on the offside. The load was 100gr Goex fffg, "hardened" .605" RB cast from 9bhn.

The recovered ball measures 7/8" x 15/16" and shed less than 1gr (326gr)
