I use .600 balls in my .62 with .018 pillow ticking. For lube, I use pure mink oil, NOT the kind used for shoes. My barrel is a Hoppy Hopkin. I would show my rifle, but after Dave Person showed his, I would be embarrassed!

Well, it depends on your bore size of the bore, some are .625 and others can be .615. A good place to start is .010 under. Adjust from there.

Lyman makes a .610

I made the .620

.610 with a .015 in both my rifles guns for best accuracy. The .600 works just fine for hunting.

My two smooth rifles prefer a .600 and an .018 patch.

Don’t ask me why…

Don't be fooled. That frizzen is so good that it starts producing sparks when it sees the flint coming. Wood, plastic, a chip of dried lasagna noodle, it all works.

As an accomplished builder, I always thought you would carry a nicer gun as your personal rifle…

I like the big punkin' rollers. I use a .590 or .595 ball and a thick patch. Maybe 90-95 gr. of 2F. Just got this one by Larry Mrock from the Ruggie collection. Where I hunt, 50yds. is a good distance to sight in.

I have a Larry Zornes handmade Roger's Rangers flintlock smoothbore. When I got it I was told it was a 16 gauge, 66 caliber. That turned out to be wrong. My .648 balls were too big. I returned the stuff and was then advised to use a .570 ball, because my gun is a 20 gauge/62 caliber. That turned out to be too small. (Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears). If i used .030 denim patches the .570 balls worked but, they were still a little loose. (I figure that equates to .600 --- .570 + .030 = .600.) From Track of the Wolf I have ordered .600 and .610 balls for testing. I assume one of those should be correct, with the appropriate patch. --- So, I don't have an exact answer for you. However, with the correct patch I think either size should work. One might be better than the other. What works for my gun may not work for you. Try them both and go from there. That's what I intend to do.

You can get molds from Track of the Wolf or Larry Callahan in Missouri.
