... Hello! Is there anyone shootin a 1-66tw 62cal flintlock rifle?? What diameter ball are you using...?... .600 or .610"...?? Thank you! SFGS! Semper Fi Godspeed!!!...

Hi,
I shoot a 62 caliber rifle with 1-66 square bottomed rifling all the time. I use 0.595" balls with 0.020-0.022" thick patches. I've used load combinations with 0.610 and 0.600 balls and thinner patches in the past but my current load works best by far in the Getz barrel. Here is the rifle.

... Hello!! Oh my... WOW...!!! What a beautiful piece. You're blessed to have that. Thank you for your input. Last year I renewed my interest.. and I'm building a 62 cal. 40" full stock Hawkins. I know my'n is not going to look like what you have. But, you gave me some ideas! That IS impressive. I'll keep you posted on my progress. SFGS! Semper Fi Godspeed!! Bernie aka BjKaboom

Well, it depends on your bore size of the bore, some are .625 and others can be .615. A good place to start is .010 under. Adjust from there.
. ..I agree on the bore size. Janson Rice suggested using a .610. I have .6 & .61 balls ordered.... I'm looking for for a .610 ball mold just in case or a 'have to have'.... :) thank you again Dave. Question?? How far are you shooting.... accurately?? I'm hoping to make a straight 1" across the flats 40", WM Malcom Long Scoped, Bench,
250 yd lethal accurate Deer Long Rifle. SFGS! Semper Fi Godspeed! Bernie aka BjKaboom

Hi,
100 yards is my longest distance for sighting in.

As an accomplished builder, I always thought you would carry a nicer gun as your personal rifle…

I have a Larry Zornes handmade Roger's Rangers flintlock smoothbore. When I got it I was told it was a 16 gauge, 66 caliber. That turned out to be wrong. My .648 balls were too big. I returned the stuff and was then advised to use a .570 ball, because my gun is a 20 gauge/62 caliber. That turned out to be too small. (Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears). If i used .030 denim patches the .570 balls worked but, they were still a little loose. (I figure that equates to .600 --- .570 + .030 = .600.) From Track of the Wolf I have ordered .600 and .610 balls for testing. I assume one of those should be correct, with the appropriate patch. --- So, I don't have an exact answer for you. However, with the correct patch I think either size should work. One might be better than the other. What works for my gun may not work for you. Try them both and go from there. That's what I intend to do.
