Hi ! any suggestions on a 777 load (12 Ga) I have seen a lot of na's, but I am rather determined to come up with both a safe and affective load. Goal is a good bismuth waterfowl load. Right now I'm shooting a 75 Gr x1 1/8oz X 71/2 lead. Manageable recoil, good ignition (hot caps). I plan to mess with Skychief as I progress. Working with a Beretta M1000 O/H and a restored older SxS. Any thoughts ?

Can't use lead for waterfowl.

That’s the same load I use with 2F for targets, don’t see why it wouldn’t work with 777?

Bismuth is about 15% lighter than lead and when you get up to waterfowl sized shot there is more air voids so you will have to adjust your measure until you get the weight you want. I wouldn’t be afraid to try 1 1/4 oz on the same powder charge. If internet lore is correct that 777 is supposedly 10% hotter by volume then you would be right on a 3 dram load.

I have used 777 in 3F and in 2F for my 12-gauge shotguns. You have to figure out the best way to load for your gun to get the patterns you want. What I found was that the 1 1/8-ounce scoop of the powder; 2 hard cards; 1 1/4-ounce scoop of #5 Bismuth and an over-shot card gave even patterns at 32-yards with no gaps that any duck could get through. I used it at my pond shooting ducks over decoys and it was extremely effective. Every duck hit in the air fell dead on the water, no cripples. Every shot was within 35-yards with a lot much closer. I wouldn't hesitate to use 777 again, but I can get Pyrodex products and some real BP for less money per pound here.

BTW There is a "new" warning on the Triple 7 products....

Blackhorn and Triple Seven are not designed for use in guns originally proofed for black powder use.
and
• Triple Seven is a high-energy powder designed to provide the muzzleloading hunter serious knockdown power. To duplicate a black powder load velocity using Triple Seven, set the volumetric charge 15% lower than recommended for black powder. Triple Seven is loaded by volumetric measure, NOT by weight

I've had small-game luck in my .54 smoothie with 80 gr of #6 shot(lead), felt wad, 60 gr 3f 777, and felt wad over shot. I happen to know that in a standard 12 gauge this same load is far more effective.
