Wondering what those of you that scrimshaw, use for the scratching. I used a sewing needle on these, but now use an old dental pick.

Welcome Whitefeather! Sounded like you wanted to post some pictures, but they didn't come through.
As for scrimshaw, I use a small hobby knife (xacto type) with the tip clipped off to do my scratching. Others use different implements.

sorry pics don't show ,I use exacto blades also # 11 and #17 I believe.also use a sail needle .has three cutting edges ..well three flats actually 6 cutting edges ,also use sewing needles for fine work.

Good lookin' scratchin's! I use a couple scribes I got from Coulter Precision and the good ol' exacto knife.

Wow! Now that I see what you've done I'm impressed. Nice artwork.

Wow nice work,I can see the pictures now, with the needle ,I find you only have the point to dig in,with the exacto,I use the knife edge for doin hair or feathers, for stronger cuts I turn it over ,gives you a stronger line as you now have 2 cutting edges, which also helps you go across the grain easier.I use the needle when I am stippling(which is just controlled jabbing ,for delicate work an shading.Again nice scrim

Nice detail in your scrimshaw!

I use a pick that's shortened with a built up handle for scratchin. No matter what I use it won't look as good as yours. GW

I'll have to give the exacto knife a try the next time. Now to find some nice white horn.

Couldn't someone use a dark horn and white ink?
Seems I seen one like that long ago.

I've done black horn, just the scratching ,is white, its a wee bit different tho as you are putting the highlites in not the shadows...opposite ,takes a bit to get used to,fun to play with tho, like your eagle instead of putting the feathers in you would put the shine on,same with the white on his head ,you would put all that in,and leave the shadows,as they are already black, you define around them, tricky, but fun

I'd love to try a black horn myself. Kinda like a "scratchboard" if you've ever tried one. You have to think "backwards" while you're working.

I've never used ink on my scrims, but use a black crayon instead. If you make a mistake you can always scratch it back out of the line and continue on.
