Around 4 months ago, I got interested into BP shooting. None of my family shot BP, so I joined a muzzleloading club to help me get started, or at least that's what I thought. Today I was informed by a family member that my great grandpa actually built a muzzleloader all the way back in the 70's. I seriously thought I was the only one interested in this stuff, but it seems that my great grandpa had a knack for it as well! It's a CVA Kentucky percussion rifle, and I'll post pics when it arrives on Saturday. Pretty interesting to think that I have a great grandpa who was into BP as well.

I had an uncle, I believe around the same time frame, who was a muzzleloader builder as well. I don't think anyone of great reputation. But I do like the idea that it isn't dying with him.

Just got the rifle today, and it is in absolute pristine condition. There was a lot of dust I had to remove in the bore and there was some brass discoloration, but after a thorough cleaning it was like brand new. I was expecting the bore to be pitted to hell, but it is in 100% perfect condition! I'll post some pics.

My very first muzzle loading rifle was a Jukar made CVA Kentucky in .45.

That looks a lot like my CVA. Same calibre too. The one I have was given to me as an unfinished kit. My brother's friend bought the kit and never did anything with it. He heard that I was into BP and gave the kit to me, minus some parts that went missing.

Great rifle to learn and grow with. That fact that it belonged to your great grandfather makes it priceless.
Now you need to use it, but maintain it well so you can pass it on to someone in the future.

Well that makes me feel a bit old, then I guess I was a bit younger "all the way back" in the 1970s. Lol

Very cool your family connects you with your great grandpa's muzzleloader, a family heirloom that has landed in the right place I'd say. He must have known what he was doing, very nicely built kit and apparently well maintained and properly stored.

Properly appreciated, used and maintained you should receive a lot on enjoyment from owning it. Now get out there and proudly shoot your family heirloom, great grandpa's gun.
