A History of the American Fur Trade

Anyone familiar with a 2 volume set of books called A History of the American Fur Trade by Hiram Martin Crittenden. Couldn't pass it up at Goodwill for the bank breaking sum of $2.99. I was going to pay $2.99 X 2 with no problem until the check out lady said that she couldn't sell me volume II because it didn't have a price on it. I told her it was a set and she called the manager to get advice. I showed the manager on what was left of the dust jacket where it said "$12.50 The Set" and she let me have both books for the price of one. Both are in good shape except for the dust jackets.

A classic of the fur trade, written in the early 1900s and still in print today. Chittenden had full access to the American Fur Company papers, some of which are unavailable today due to a fire, so he draws on sources that are otherwise unknown. Good reading, enjoy!

Thanks Rod, I had never heard of Mr Crittenden. These appear to be a 1954 reprint of his work and I look forward to getting started on them.

These two volumes were also reprinted in 1986 in paperback; currently available on Amazon for less than $23.00 each, used copies readily available. A great read of the history and characters of the Western Fur Trade. You got a great deal on them! mjw

And remember the name is CHITTENDEN, NOT CRITTENDEN. It'll save you some time looking it up
