oderless mineral spirits and a small sqeeze tube of clear silicon (not the latex base, must be silicone based)
You only need to apply it to one side, it will soak thew. So the looser you make it the better. minerial spirits will break down the thickness of the silicone and act as a delivery system to allow the silicone to penetrate the cloth and bond with the fibers. the spirits will dry and leave the silicone behind to dry and bond.

Maybe this is the wrong place to post this. If so, mods please move it.

I'm wanting to make a protective rifle sleeve and I'm thinking some kind of canvas. Maybe a drop cloth?

So, it should be waterproof and I'm wondering what to use for waterproof. Needs to be something that won't damage the rifle.

Any suggestions?
Some of the canvas tent and teepee makers make rifle sleeves that tie closed on the end. I have one made of brown oil cloth that will shed water. The brown color allows it to blend in with natural surroundings much better than a white one does.

A couple more questions about this process!

What source for the silicone? There's a bunch of things with silicone in the label and maybe you have one that you prefer?

One side or both sides?

A very well respected wood worker and stock finisher on rimfirecentral warned that silicone can creep under finishes and cause bubbling/cracking and other nastiness. Strongly recommend to NEVER get silicon stuff near fine wood with a finish on it.

As to making a sleeve and water proofing it... multiple layers. Inner soft layer of wool blanket, leg cut from wool pants, etc. Outer layer is the shell for water proofing and you could go with oiled or waxed canvas or sail cloth, a deer skin, etc.

All the guns in my safe live in individual Sack Up silicone treated gun socks , these are cheap and stop the guns moving in the earth quakes and are excellent at keeping the guns rust free . Each rifle has its own leather or blanket bag for traveling . SACKUPS – Store I don't think the silicone is the socks is in sufficient quantities to affect the wood , Maybe silicone spray or paste could be a problem .
