2 pages, how did the folks of the 1800's figure out how to shoot their rifles, drum beating or smoke signals, many miles between lodgings?

Does it really matter? We aren't trying to accurize their rifles, we are trying to accurize our rifles of today. That was then, this is now. Now, we have the computer to replace smoke signals and drum beating.... and we can drive cars and trucks to the match or rendezvous instead of horses or moccasin leather. Our forefathers lacked a lot of the technology that we have today and we lack a lot of the skills that they possessed back in their day. Time marches on.

Agree and dis-agree, seems the same subjects are always discussed with no resolve.

Man, I love this forum. Not being a hunter I would have not thought about many of the points brought up by you.

I can load, shot and even hit the target but the reality of having to live and rely on these guns as they did never hit me like this thread. The Osborne Russell journal would describe me with my tender foot skills.

Great thread!

Thats why I LOVE Muzzleloading!

Use a slightly thicker patch. If it loads very easy on the first shot then you probably need a thicker patch. I use .018 pillow ticking .015 did not work well with my gun.

Rather than a fowling shot I run a (grease) lubed patch in & out before the first load - after I have run an alcohol damp patch to remove the storage oils.

Not only protects the barrel when hunting but gets the only important shot (the first one) where my sights want it and in the deer's vitals.

Hi,
I don´t shoot a fouling shot, BUT I DO KNOW that first shot from a clean bore will not hit the same point that the following ones (quick cleaning wet+dry patch between shots).

A completely clean bore (and degreased with a dry patch) has a completely different surface "roughness" than a "clean" fouled one...so, the internal ballistics will be different.

I don´t shoot the first shot to the backstop because I use it as concentration and re-getting used to that rifle.
