Now another question - if I purchase the Lyman GPR unassembles kit, I know the wood is unfinished, but how about the metal (specifically the barrel)? Do I need to blue or brown it and if so how difficult is that?

Well, this is kinda getting into the area called the Gun Builders Bench here on the forum but to answer your question, yes, you will have to finish the barrel and the other metal parts.

How you do it is up to you but basically you can use a cold bluing, a hot browning, or a cold browning method.
The cold bluing is the stuff you get at a gun store and the results will not wear well and it (IMO) will look pretty poor.
The cold browning is perhaps the easiest and is the method used back 'in the days'.

Some forum members seem to like a soft gray finish and that is easily done with Navel Jelly.

Anyway, to really answer your question to the depth it should be answered, post it on the Gun Builders Bench.

yeah you have to finish the metal, im one of the "soft grey" fans, you can do this with vinegar, or naval jelly. either way you want to do this rifle, you'll have lots of help here! remember its only scary the first time. the GPR is really an easy build, so i say go for it!

this is one i built recently with the naval jelly finish. and its being raffled off in sept.

I just sold my (Investarms)Lyman Great Plains-Hunter .54, 1:32twist that I used in the Mississippi Swamp for hogs.

This last year I took my (Investarms)Cabela's .54 RB 1:56 hawkin and it kills them just as dead.

I utterly love both rifles, unlike many I just didn't need two muzzleloader rifles.

WHADAYA MEAN, I don't need two muzzleloader rifles. Man, don't you know (He who dies with the most toys.....Wins.) Please don't ever speak to my wife.

Jonesy:

Sorry, I'm one of those very picky types and get sorta personal with my guns, in that each one has its hunting days.

I'd rather sell one to a good home then leave it behind on opening morning.

:rotf: So if you're the one who just bought my "tricked out" Lyman .54 GPR-Hunter, I won't tell your wife.
