i got one from a reputable company, i gave it too a friend to whittle down for me and when he was done the ramrod was off horrible! he said it was like that when he got it. i knew it was off but not that bad or i would have sent it back! I couldn't live with it so I traded him for another gun and he kept it,,,,,,,,,,,,,

My pecatonica precarve had a dog leg with the ramrod channel on the inside of the stock. Looking down into the stock with a light, I could see the hole veered to the right. This would have been fine had it been a right handed gun. However this gun is left handed. I ate into the channel inletting the lock. I had to make a scraping tool to move wood inside the channel so it would straighten out.

I like the stock. Its got very nice color to it. I would have liked better to see a straight hole in a piece of wood that I paid over $200 for. It was not a top shelf cut but its probably two from the top of their list, so. Theres no excuse really for their mistake. I didnt complain about it to them simply because I had too much into it work wise, so I worked around it and kept going.

I will not let this stop me from buying abother stock from Pecatonia, but next time if theres an issue like this, Im going find it before working the stock. And if I do find a problem, its going right back with an exchange or refund request.

I wonder... Did the barrel channel make a dog leg too?? IF so, and maybe if not, you could have tried to bend the wood into shape. Saturate the stock with boiling hot water, as from a tea pot. Install a barrel and put steel rod in the ramrod channel. Then wrap the stock with surgical tubing. The wood will bend to conform the the steel rod and barrel. Let it dry a week I have done this with a sloppy barrel channel in a precarve. It closed it up perfectly and permanently.

I would think just inserting the barrel into the stock would straighten out any bend in the barrel channel.

My barrel channel wasn't inletted straight down, the barrel was leaning at a visible angle. I had to drop the barrel and move it back to try to get the pan centered on a flat so I corrected the "lean" on my way down.

My best friend has ordered 7 precarve stocks from Pecatonica, he said 5 were perfect and 2 had very minor issues.

They used to say never buy a car that was made on Friday or Monday. The consensus of opinion was they slopped together cars on Friday while they were waiting to get off and start drinking on the weekend, on Monday they were too hungover to do good work.

My precarve must have been made on a Friday or a Monday.

A good thing about working from a blank is you can get the wood grain through the wrist the way it should be. I use a plexiglass stock template so I can line it up just right. IF you have enough width on the blank.....I will never use another pre carve again, always SOMETHING wrong!

I'm sure that the people Pecatonica would have made it right and given you another stock. I've bought two stocks from them. I'm working on one now. They've been good to deal with. I'm glad that you were able to work with the stock. I'd probably let them know about it anyway.

I did let them know, even sent pictures, I got no response, but it was a third hand kit purchase. I felt they didn't have any responsibility in the matter after the kit changed hand three times but I wanted to point out their mistakes to them.
