39" Barrel signed "VII SH WARD JAMESTOWN NC". Approximately .30 caliber. Triggers function. Lock has no halfcock, which is typical of these based on 4 Jamestown rifles I've handled. Gap behind the tang makes me wonder if it was rebarreled or stocked with a spare stock at somepoint in its life. Missing ramrod and one tang screw where the wood gave way. Stock is a tad beat up, has some cracks, and has a small chunk missing forward of the lock. Crack in the hammer near the tumbler shank. Otherwise complete. At present this gun is obviously a wallhanger, but an example of a plain later 19th century NC longrifle. Bought it in Charlotte a few years ago and was unable to obtain any additional provenance for it, but thankfully the barrel is signed. Solomon Ward's shop made lots of barrels that other Jamestown (Guilford County, NC) gunsmiths purchase and built guns around.
