I took a few minutes to try to get some photos of the latch setup I did.

But every mountain man rifle was a brand new unblemished rifle at some point. They didn’t leave the maker’s shop pre-antiqued.

Yes, I overthink stuff trying to see the other guy's logic or point of view. Making something look older than it is, is a thing I'd never do to my guns.

I removed the factory blue and the muddy looking stock finish on my Pietta 1858 Remington. Then ground the metal grip frame smaller just a bit behind the trigger guard for more knuckle room and used Brownell's T-4 gun black solution. Not to look like an antique but just because I did not like the slick original metal finish or the sloppy applied grip stain. Have not done the cylinder yet though. View attachment 315921

I'm the same. I only have one and it came like that. Its a Schneider and Glassick Replica

I have both types of the Brownells solutions and I used the cream type on this gun as I like it best. I only used two coats. The more you apply the darker it gets and I wanted a used looking finish.

A small bottle is plenty as it goes a long way. I tried a lot of brands and this worked best for me. This one is a black finish. If you want a blue color the Brownells Oxpho-Blue is great too.
