The patch kind of defeats the purpose of the minnie ball, easy quick loading, with reasonable accuracy. The PRB takes longer to load and on a dirty rifle can cause loading problems but is generally more accurate. For PRB in a rifle designed to shoot minnie balls you really have to play with the ball/patch combination to find what works best in your rifle.

I bought a Chiappa/Armi 1842 smooth bore. I like it. I thought about letting the bright steel "patinaize" over time, but I may not live that long. Also, I am a compulsive cleaner, so rust is not in this gun's future. So, I felt like trying a finish of some sort. I found a product at www.historichouseparts.com called Brass Tarnishing Solution. Does it work on steel? Hell yeah. The result is not blue or brown but slightly brownish gray, and it makes the metal look older. The product is easy to use and works quickly. I wore gloves, wiped the parts with spirits, applied the finish and then buffed it with 0000 steel wool. I forgot the cost, but it is cheap, and after doing all of the parts twice, I still have more than half of the 8-ounce bottle left.
Like the guy above, I found the factory finish too shiny and not durable, so I stripped and then oil-finished the stock.
The smoothie version has no rear sight, but if I sight over the center of the rear of the barrel, the result is not Bambi friendly.
