Several years ago I bought an ASM 1851 Navy second hand from a pawn shop. Everything appears to be in pretty good shape except I got to wondering about the retaining screw. The one on the left that secures the wedge. I some how "feel" it could possibly be a screw that the original owner blued and stuck in after losing the other. In other words not the factory original. Could one of you ASM owners possibly measure the screw and tell me how long it's supposed to be. And maybe how big a head it's supposed to have.

Got another screw question. I have a bad habit of losing screws. I took the top off a flask to undent it and misplaced the 3 little screws that held the top on. I think it's called a Friendship Flask (reproduction,of course)Actually before y'all think me some sort of an absent minded whatever it was my niece who "rearranged things", but I'm the one who can't locate them. Are the screws on flasks a standard or metric thread? Like the ones you'd find at a hardware store. And should they be brass?

I don't currently own an ASM Navy but my experience with replacing wedge screws (they seem to be missing fairly often on used guns I've bought) didn't show much, if any, difference between manufacturers. As to your flask screws, on a reproduction they should be metric. Brass would be best (they match the flask head) but steel would work. They won't be a spark risk going into a brass flask head. And a couple original flasks I've owned that had screws had steel (or iron) screws in them.

What would happen if a lost screw was replaced with one that fits the thread but is a tad too short? I'm referring to the wedge screw.

The wedge screw should only be removed if you are taking the wedge completely out and should not be loosened when pushing the wedge over to remove the barrel. The wedge stays with the barrel when the barrel is off the gun. The purpose of the wedge screw is to catch the end of the wedge spring so the wedge can't fall out by accident and get lost. So long as it has enough threads to tighten in place (and it doesn't need much) it is fine.
