File this in the 'for what it's worth' catagory.
I wanted to give my Lyman GPR flinter to my e-pal in South Africa.
He checked with his Governement agnecies and since m/l's were just deregulated he can accept it as a 'gift' which it is, without import duty. He would reimburse me for shipping.
I took it to the post office to arimail.
No problem. Filled out the export declaration, paid the postage and on my way.
The Postmaster just called. He askes that I retrieve my package as U.S. Customs refuses to let ANY FIREARM out of the Country without a dealers EXPORT license.
Even then they MAY NOT permit it to leave the Country. This is all perfectly legal and unfortunately rests on the decision of one person at Customs.
So it goes.
Guess I'll have to make time to shoot my toys...can't even give one away.
AND NO ZONIE I ain't giving you my toys. You have enough of your own.

Claude has the right idea, I gave shipped several BP revolers as custome machine parts which include a pellet storage cylinder with pellet distribution and guidence tube and wood control handle.

Put the barrel in one box and the rest of the gun in another. Ship it as "misc. gun parts" in two separate shipments.
Exactly. Just a couple of weeks ago I was at the local gunshop listening in as the shop owner gave a lady advice on how to ship her revolver. He told her to remove the cylinder. It is now "gun parts", not a "gun", and can be shipped separately no problem.

You might want to consider UPS instead of USPS. I would call a reputable gun dealer and ask them. They probably know the best way to go about it.

FWIW...UPS centers are putting in package scanning equipment...could be a problem if a firearm was detected through scanning, yet the contents description was falsified

Hey maxiball -

In this situation, do what I do. surprise him with an authentic patch knife. :haha: :haha: :blah: :blah:

Y not so H & not so OS, sse

P.S.

I thought muzzle loaders were non-firearms by definition
Here in the U.S. this is TRUE! Somebody needs to clue our customs officials in on ATF's policy toward muzzleloaders!
A ML rifle, pistol, musket, fowler, etc., etc. is NOT a FIREARM, according to U.S. federal law! :shocking:

There's a misconception about this law. Although a flintlock is not considered a "firearm" in certain cases, it's still a "gun". Get caught with one in the wrong place and you'll be charged with possession of a "firearm".

If anyone here wants to test this law, say at an airport or bank, we'll be glad to post the results.

Maxie: Ah thinks ye needs ta ship it in two packages, but Ah also thin one of them should hav only the barrel. Tha other package would have tha stock an lock. Both packages would be called "antique gun parts", or maybe "Muzzleloading Gun Parts".

Aint nothin sneeky 'bout em names an thay wood giv tha guy runnin tha X ray machin an ider of what he is ah goin ta see.

On tha other end in South Africa they wood hav an ider of what it wer too.
Iffen ye jus say Gun Parts thay mite think it were soemthin fer a .50 cal Browning Machine Gun an hold it up fer who knows how long? :)

Remember: No Good Turn goes Unpunished!!!

. UPS will not ship a gun now anyway unless it is of a design pre 1900 or something like that ; I just went through this with the UPS about a month ago. It can be a new rifle as long as it meets their date requirements.

So what if you list it as an antique and get a friend to give you a receipt foe say???? 2000. Have it insured for that amount and give UPS a copy of the receipt as proof of cost, get a tracking number and delivery date and ship it off. If they take it in SA and you friend doesn
