I have a very old double percussion shotgun with both back action locks needing work. One has a broken stirup, both have allot of stripped screww threads. But all parts are there including the main springs.
Does anyone know of a person that is really good at repairing these, or where to get parts????
Thanks in advance,
Brad

More information would be nice, are the screws striped or the lock plate?
Can you post pictures of the locks, inside and out?
I have some old locks but the chance that any would interchange with your locks is little.

Making new parts will be the most likely way; likely most professional basic gunsmiths could do it.

Is the rest of the gun in otherwise serviceable condition? The repairs don't sound overly complex, but it doesn't mean they would be cheap either. Generally if a lock has reached a point where the screws are stripped and the stirrup is broken/missing there is other wear there as well. The odds of finding replacement parts that will work without modification is about slim and none. Detailed photos would help a lot in diagnosing the problem.

Thanks to all for responding. I will try an add some photos.
One of the locks is really bad, all the screws are stripped and when I put it in the gun it basically falls apart in there.
The other lock is not better but at least will stay together.
The gun as a whole is not very good condition. The barrels both have dents, one is even out of round at the muzzle.
It is a friend of mine's. I told him about the same thing you all did, especially that it will not be cheap, and that he will never safely firw this relic.
But he wants to try, and if he has more money than brains, I guess I'll keep trying.
And you are right, this thing looks like it has been worked on by more than a few NON EXPERTS. Some of thE work seems to have done more harm than good.
But its about all there and with some patience and allot of work, I think it could be made functional, which is what he wants, not necesarily fireable though.
Thankls as always

I have been there. The sad fact is that the gun is best to hang on the wall for atmosphere. It would cost much more than it is worth to get the locks working, and then the barrels would not be likely to survive the proof test. Dents in wire barrels are usually fatal in my experience. I have blown the dent up in proof firing such a gun, and have heard bad things about attempting to remove them. If you really want to proceed, get the cost to remove barrel dents, replace nipples, repair stock, repair locks, and then consider the gun may be worth $500 after the repair. You can buy old shootable doubles from TOW or Dixie for $700 or $800 if you keep your eyes open.

AMEN, Brother.
Just isnt worth it.
One The only thing I am going to suggest is that we replace the small hammer screws that are now on the gun. The hammers fall off over the screw heads.
With larger, more correct looking heads at least the gun wont fall apart when handling it.
Then he can hang it on the wall where it belongs.
Thanks all, as always
