What do you use for a back stop qhile shooting your cap and Ball pistols?
I may have to hire a person with a backhoe to make some hills or something. I live in a Red pocket in the North East of CT so i think ill be Okay firing light charges once a week or so. If not, eventually ill join a proper shooting club.

Or used tires stacked and filled with anything ,rifle too/Ed
The problem with tires I found out the hard way, was that with some BP loads, and some modern stuff too, the steel belts can make the balls bounce back a bit. Likely not a problem with a BP revolver as they rarely work well at all with anything other than soft lead, and that tends not to bounce off the steel belts. The solution was to bank some earth over top of the tires, so less dirt needed, and the layer of dirt prevents the bounce back.

A stack of railroad ties works too....

Wood makes them bounce back. 4 to.6 ply tires will do fine. Even my .17 goes through them.

Railroad ties is one I'd never use.

I'm glad to see you using a backstop. I'm a firm believer in backstops, no matter how much property a person owns behind the target.
I used RR ties stacked up against a 4x4 post frame I made and leaned against a tree. Then I piled dirt against it. This let me get twice as high and twice as wide than I would have with just the dirt mound.

I'm not why I'm quitting shooting long range they want back stop at every target ,great but I shoot for practice for hunting . A 100 yd back stop does nothing for my 160 yd target . The stupidity of backstops at our private range is evident along with the stupid members who voted for it(never shot it) when looking thru scope or irons you see
a 8 ft barrier surrounded by dirt ! You have to elevate a 200 yd target to 6 ft high just to see over the grass and shooting from the bench there's enough drop you shoot into the brook and into the base of a 400 yd target/ barrier (the hill) and beyond the knob is the 700 yd target(knob)and so on . All courtesy of nature and the stupidy of folks with out a clue thinking they need barriers like they shoot at in Florida where everything is FLAT . Not everyone has this situation but it is cause for me refusing to shoot long and reinforce stupidity ! There is the short range (200 yd) with no restrictions (where youll find me shooting Ed) The club has 1700 acres

In the past, have always used RailRoad ties with a dirt mound behind. Around here can get used ones for free after they run the line replacing the bad ones. Now live in town and cannot shoot here so I shoot at friends house. He has a raised RR bed that runs thru the edge of his property that we shoot into.

Probably just as well then.

I shoot at the club range which has a 12'+ berm against a 20' bank. Only 100 yards but that suits me just fine. Lots of good posts above.

First you better check with your local police if ANY kind of shooting is allowed in your area or the cops will be visiting you with handcuff in hand! With that said railroad ties make a fine backstop along with a dirt berm. Also post "No Trespassing" signs all along your property line so if some of your neighbor kids "visit" you while you are shooting you can call the cops on them and have them removed and they can also scold their parents for the kids trespassing. But you will not win and you will be taken to court and fined for conducting dangerous activities on YOUR property!:(

Provided we have the back stop and 500 feet between houses we are good. However, the idiots next door vote for the incompetent party so you know how that goes.

A friend of mine allows the big tree trimming companies to dump the wood chips from their trucks on his farm. They are always looking for free places to unload them. Each load makes about a 6ft X 6ft pile. Stops bullets with no bounce back. Pile them as high and wide as you want. Also makes good garden additive after they decompose a few years.

Just save the hassle you know is coming and join a range. If the cops show up even just one time for a complaint, you are in the system and a very easy target.
