Bad day in the shop

I was drilling out the recess for me patchbox, and everything went fine for the first three holes, but on my last hole the Forsner bit kicked out of the hole and gouged the side of the stock.

I inletted a new piece of wood to patch it. I'll have to give it a day for the epoxy to set up strong enough to shape the patch and see how it looks.

I'm pretty bummed out. I was going to stain the stock dark anyway...maybe I should paint it black.

Do not despair, There is nothing wrong with a patch in your stock. All it says is that a man made it and not a machine.

This Forstner bit was way too big for this size box imho. Half that size and then get the rest with a sharp chisel. Drill bits were used there originally,too, but operated by a hand drill. If using a hand drill, these things don't happen because you feel the bit wants to grip.

Mine as well, so far one patch above the lock, one in the barrel channel near the breech, one on the right side of the tang mortice, and a big one under the barrel over the RR. My guess is that none of them will be responsible for my bad shooting.

On the useful side, in lieu of a serial number I will always be able to describe it to perfection in the event of a non discerning thief absconding with it. :rotf:

Been watching you build this rifle since I've thought about trying one. Sorry for the mishap, I know you've been trying to be careful. Or are you trying to show us how to fix those....oops. Good luck buddy

Oh wow... I hope you can get it to work out for you. Maybe some type of horn inlay over the patch to fool the eye. :hmm:

I usually drill w/ a 3/8" regular drill in a "hole shooter"....don't know what's faster. W/ the 3/8" holes, the webs are only approx. 1/6" thick and chisel out easily, whereas w/ the Forstner bit, a lot of wood is left....which you were trying to remove when the "accident" happened. The advantage w/ the Forstner bit is the larger flat bottom area. Don't know if it's a "tossup" or not.....Fred

Well Tecumtha, it's kind of a case of live and learn. This is the first time I attempted a patchbox this way, and I'm learning as I go.

Next time I'll know more...but this time I'll have to fix it.

Anyone who didn't understand the phrase "that sucks", need only look at the pics for clarification of the term.

And if you don't like the patch you can always add another inlay of some sort to cover the patch.

You know that is heartbreaking but your patch should be fine. You just need a brass inlay there now after you get the wood flush. Probably use a full size toe plate blank and scallop the bottom. Now you just need to look around and see if its PC from the guys for the bucks or Liegh county guns if your worried about that.
Scratch that, the bottom edge looks longer than 5" get a full sheet and have it follow the entire hinge length slope it up following the line of the heel.
Now we get to see how artist you are.
