what barrel length do you enjoy shooting and hunting with?

I am finishing up a 42" Fowler and going to be starting a 44" JP beck. I have enjoyed my 36" Lancaster but I keep wanting to try the longer barrels. :thumbsup:

I have used barrels from 28" -44" and would not hesitate to use a 48" barreled gun I like the.looks and feel of the originals types with longer barrels, these can be quite light if the barrel is made properly but even with todays typical clunky barrels those I have used out to 44" not at all ncomfortable the fusil I now use has a 44" tube and weighs just under 8 lbs and balances/handles very nicely, if anything they may make a better hunter out of some by slowing them down a bit

I am so used to my 38 inch barreled rifles that everything else feels awkward, but that is just me. Im thinking of trying a 42 my next build though :thumbsup:

when I had a rifle built for hunting...the barrel was 39" because my old cva penn was 39,,I had hunted with a 42"..an kept gettin snow in the barrel..lol.(jus how I carry it..).but for shoots and 'vous,,42" is great,,but never shot anything longer...maybe, someday,, :wink:

I shot a carolina gun with a 48" barrel for many years, it shot extremely well. I have built and shot several HVFs and bucanners with 60" barrels and found those to be good performers also. Balance and weight is not a problem with properly profiled barrels.
I'm currently working on a HVF with a 72" barrel, looks like it will weigh ten to eleven lbs when it is finished.

Two questions.
Wats a HVF?
And: Why?
Methinks a 72" barrel would look freaky and be more of a curiosity than a practical firearm. I know those in museums like that remind me of the two headed calves seen in museums.

Edit: Not saying you sholdn't do it. I support doin' wat floats yer stick. Go for it and enjoy. :grin:

Rifleman,
I have a New England fowler with 72" fowler and it is anything but a 2 headed calf. When everything is proportioned and assembled "properly" it is no less pretty than any other fowler/longrifle. Mine has a walnut stock appropriatley sized lock plate and hardware and weighs in at 11#. Can send a couple of pictures if you like.

HVF = Hudson Valley Fowler.
WHY? Because everyone else here gets to abbreviate everything so I thought I would to.
72" barrels? Read books. You'll find they were common in places where waterfowl were hunted.

Good enough reason for me. Not sure I'm ready to step up to that barrel lenght just yet myself, but like my 42" .32, so cant argue with the logic. Enjoy it and I hope it serves you well.

My new Fowler in .69 or 14 Ga will sport a 51 inch barrel
My profile taken from originals and alittle help from the experts here on MLF
