Barrel Question

Was just wondering if any of you guys knew who made the TOW barrels said to be made in the USA?

ask Totw? I imagine it is Rice, Colerain, or Green Mountain. can't think of any others active right now.
in the past there was Douglas but they got hounded out of the Muzzleloader business.
Sharon is history, there were a few more but they are like my memory, gone!

I know it sounds crazy but I did and they told me they don't disclose who makes their barrels only that they're American made.

I love TOW, most of my business goes to them. But over the years I've had less than favorable results with one particular guy. So maybe that's who you happened to speak with too. I think you should call back until you talk to someone that will tell you. That's kinda important information, at least it is to me.

I haven’t any interest in who if the quality is high. Most American barrel makers put out fine work the difference is more in the details like form of rifling and barrel contour, etc.

I've bought Colerain directly from Colerain and a couple of barrels from TOW. The tow barrels have no markings and square bottom rifling. Like Phi said they shoot well so why question, I was just wondering if someone knew.

I read, a while back, that the house brand barrels were made with narrow grooves and wide lands. I have never had a barrel rifled that way that shot accurately enough to suit me. That is a total deal breaker. I'd be real clear on that point before buying.

I'd be very happy with a button barrel rifled like TC and CVA used to make. That is the cheap way to do it. They shoot really well with minimal fuss. I am surprised none are offered.

Track of the Wolf is contractually bound not to name the builder of this barrel. So don't ask. But there is a clue. I build Hawken rifles with 15/16" barrels for lighter weight, .50 and .54 caliber. Green Mountain and Colerain have 5/8x18 threaded plugs for their 15/16" barrels. When you fit that plug (.625 OD threads) into a.540 bore, there is almost no shoulder to fit against. So I use 15/16" barrels with a 3/4x16 one-inch plug and tang and file the tang to match the OD of the barrel. Tracks 15/16" .50 and .54 barrels have 3/4x16 plugs. So does Rice. I ordered a TOW barrel, but it was back ordered, so I got a Rice. Rice used to have a full description of their barrels and plug size on their web site, but not now.

I worked on a friends TOW Hawken and when I removed the barrel it was stamped Sharon on the underside.

I will only use Green Mtn barrels as they are the only ones Track sells that are made of 1134 barrel certified steel. All the others they sell are 12L14 which is what Douglas used and got sued out of the muzzle loading barrel making business. Douglas was using cold rolled 12L14 which has less resistance to shock than hot rolled but 12L14 is not barrel certified steel in any of it's forms. Technically it is screw stock steel alloy that machines very beautifully is fairly inexpensive and is the reason it it used for low pressure muzzle loading barrels .
It works fine as long as there are no mistakes made like short starts or double charges but there is little room for error with it's use in barrels.
