I’m just wondering, when did half stocks and barrel ribs come around? Don’t really see them until the 1800’s and I’m just wondering when and where they really developed. Can’t seem to find an answer. Come to think of it, I don’t recall seeing too many flintlocks with half stocks and ribs, seems to be a more percussion era thing. Anyway. Thanks!

Half stocks started about 1790 on English rifles. The 1803 HF was an early example of this. A rib was needed to hold the ram rod pipes. Although we see some guns to be converted to half stocks with pipes soldered or brazed to the barrel
Ribs were mostly iron, but New England guns were made with wood ribs

Wooden ribs? Never seen those before but I can imagine. Thanks!
