Bear Grease..............

So I lucked out and found someone that gave me a chunk of for real bear grease. Seems to be a lot of folks that like the stuff for muzzleloading. So that brings up the question of, what is the best use for bear grease? Patch lube? Preserving the barrel? Conical lube? Or is there other good uses for it in the wonderful world of muzzleloaders?

Hair oil. It'll give you that greasy "long time in woods" look.

Yes. I have used it for 20+ years in a LH .62cal percussion rifle made by Mike Adkins with .15 pillow ticking on a round ball.

None that I can tell. Just like it as it was what I started with and worked fine, so, no need to change.

Don't know about comparison. Bear grease works very well. MY suggestion is to try it for yourself.

Indeed. That has been the plan. Been a long time since I killed a bear and I had forgotten how slick the stuff is.

I understand native Americans used bear grease for cooking, skin care, and mosquito repellant. I reckon they used it for patch lube, too.

I've heard some say that's the only way to make cornbread.

It’s a great patch lube for sub-freezing temps. I don’t waste it on anything else.

Got a jar of it in my shooting box. Never been opened.

The bear grease I have actually melts into a thick oil just by letting it set out on a table. I wiped down the outside of a barrel as well as the stock with it. Works very well for that. It is very slick stuff.

Using it on .015" cotton patches with just 20 grains of 3F out of my .32 blew the patches to pieces. Not sure if that would happen with pillow ticking, if I can ever find some .015".
