Bore Rust Colrain Barrels

I'm not blaming Colrain, for making a barrel with deep rifling. Just pointing out to the OP, that you need to be more diligent in the cleaning of "any" deep rifling. What works for a TC, may not work for every deep rifled barrel.

I was looking at the crown of my .54 with a Rice barrel to see it the crown had any sharp spots that my be responsible for the torn patches I was getting. I could see the same slight rust as you were seeing in your barrel in the groves of my barrel. I checked my .44 with a Large barrel and found the same stuff.

A scotch bright cleaning patch didn't get it out. I will give the bore a good going over with a bore brush today and see if that gets it.

This rust is like a slight film, no pitting and my patches come out very clean after my normal cleaning regimen.

Here is a nice inexpensive bore scope that plugs into the USB port on your computer. A bit long, but it comes with a right angle mirror to inspect the rifling on your bore.

Yup, I'd add WD-40 to your steps. Swab it out and then use a better bore oil. I use CLP but there are tons that will work fine.

I use a little simple green in my cleaning water. Not sure if it helps or not.

I'm not so sure about the hydrogen peroxide idea. I know it can be used to accelerate rusting.

Re: rusting in a barrel treated with any kind of peroxide mix. I have been using it for nearly 30 years with zero rusting problems. But, to back up what I just said, I pulled two rifles out this past weekend which have not been fired in years and which were treated with a peroxide, alcohol and Murphy's Oil Soap mix the last time they were cleaned. Ran a patch with CLP down the bore of each and guess what...no rust! The key to using a peroxide mix is to thoroughly oil the bore after drying and to add a bit of oil a day or two later. It has worked for me without any issue and it can for you and anyone else, if you follow the regimen.

But why use a known chemical oxidizer when it is completely unnecessary to get a bore clean?
Warm soapy water and stiff bristle brush will clean a bore squeaky clean to the groove corners then a dry patch or two followed by a WD-40 patch and finish with your favorite gun oil.
I have found the Gunailla bore cleaner to be unsurpassed for all my gun bore cleaning needs but I still use soapy water with a warm water rinse for BP before the Gunzilla treatment left in the bore.

I've never understood why people seem to think that using Hydrogen Peroxide works better than distilled water to clean their black powder guns.

Maybe it's the fizzing it makes when they mix it with other things?

Actually, hydrogen peroxide consists of a very weak bond between a water molecule and an extra oxygen atom.

It is quite unstable and will break down all by itself but if it gets around other things the mixture speeds up the process.
After the extra oxygen atom has fizzed off, the only thing remains is pure water.

That's why I say, buy a gallon of distilled water at 88¢ a gallon instead of buying Hydrogen Peroxide at 88¢ (and higher) a pint.

Not only will you be money ahead but you can use the distilled water to top off your battery or to fill your windshield washer tank in your car.
(You folks up North should add some alcohol to the washer tank along with the distilled water to keep it from freezing).

Because it is easy and since I am old guy I appreciate doing stuff that is not a lot of trouble. My point was that the treatment, and again I have used it for almost thirty years, has not damaged the rifles I use it in...or did I not make that clear? Drug store peroxide is diluted and the other two ingredients dilute it even more. It is not going to ruin the steel in my barrels. I do not leave it sitting in the bore and I always thoroughly dry the bore and oil generously. I don't know what more I can say. Use what you like, if it works. That is what I do.

Plain, cold tap water works wonders for me. I wouldn't allow Hydrogen peroxide anywhere near my barrels.

Most folks use plain water.

The reason I mentioned distilled water is, like peroxide, it doesn't contain any minerals so it doesn't leave anything behind.

The tap water where I live has a lot of dissolved calcium in it. So much that when I wash my cars, any water that is left to evaporate leaves a white discoloration on the surface.

Others have a lot of iron dissolved in their water and it leaves iron deposits in the form of rust on their guns.

Plug hole, pore let it sit for just a minute or so, slosh around, dump, run some wet patches with the mixture on it, run dry patches, oil, put away. Never worry about rust bc if I recall there is only 5% water in the entire mixture so it all evaporates pretty fast.

Our water has that problem as well. But It likely is not nearly as bad as the problem you have to put up with.

97% of the peroxide is water so the mix has way more than 5% water.

That does not matter. I been using that mix for over 25 years and have no rust at all. I put the guns away after the last match of the year and don't wipe again until the next season. I always use wd-40 after then RIG grease the bore whether for overnight or over the winter.
