Bought a Very Early T/C Hawken

At the gun show today for $150.00. It has a Green Mountain conical barrel on it that appears unfired. I have a pile of conicals & sabot bullets so I'm well fixed for shooting it. Anyone ever shot one of these fast twist barrels?

I also found out where there is a Pedrosoli 12 gauge double for $375.00. I may have to look into that.

Sounds like you scored a serious deal.
Is yours a fifty? I've heard that they made 45's but never seen one.
Mine are on Renegade stocks. Like having a 50-90 except not scrubbing BP fouling out of the cases. No complaints but I do wish they had made a 32".

Mine is a .50. The stock has the very pronounced cheek piece and the flush brass washer on the side where the lock screw is installed.

I have a fairly early TC Hawken. It's serial number is 63xx and it is 45 cal. It also has a pretty high cheek piece.

With the 370 grain T/C Maxi-Balls in .50 cal, our Black Powder League Chairman uses 60 grains at 50 yards and 70 grains at 100 yards. Both loads are 3Fg Goex, with a hard cardboard wad over the powder. Same rifle--same barrel--same twist, so how's that for a starting point??

Do yourself a favor and remember to always use a bore brush with Shooter's Choice or anything else that will eat melted plastic from the sabots :wink: . Most shooters (NOT saying YOU) only take 2-4 shots to sight-in at the beginning of the season. They harvest a few deer with the sabots, clean the rifle with a black powder cleaner, then put it away. Problem is that after doing this a while, a plastic build-up fills-in the grooves and the accuracy of your tack-driving sabots goes away :wink: .

Any cleaner good for plastic shotgun wads will do the trick! And it will work for the huge 370 grain lead conicals too! You'll be absolutely surprised how much lead will come out of a "clean" bore! This is one of the reasons that Maxi's get a bad rap--most shooters only use hot water & dish soap, which is great for lubed patched round balls. Even my favorite bp cleaner, Butch's Black Powder Bore Shine leaves lead in the grooves, which falls out when brushed with Shooter's Choice :wink: .

Hello from Germany!

Take these traditional sabots, called PRB and you will never have a problem with plastic in the barrel! :shake: A .50 PRB brings all kind of game down within its range! :thumbsup:

The twist in this barrel is a 1:28. I doubt it will shoot PRBs very well. I'm going to try them.

It will when using charges of 40-50 grs otherwise the Rb becomes to much spin.

I've got my TC Custom Hawken .50 lurking in the back of my safe just itching to be used, but the customs get the official nod when thinking/shooting BP.

I bought it in 1992. It looks great, and it shoots roundball beautifully. My failing agiing brain seems to recall a 1:48 twist. Recently I've decided to make it my official BP conical rifle. Also thinking seriously of at least trying out a cnical in ONE barrel of my newly acquired Kodiak .72 calibre.

Mark,I have a pretty early one myself in the 3000 ser# range.. Is yours earlier than that?? Just wondering since this one is the lowest ser# I have seen and does yours have the short adjustable sight?

This one doesn't have a serial number on the stock and the barrel has been replaced with a Green Mountain LRH. I'm going to order a T/C scope mount for it this morning.

When you have to shoot more than 52 consecutive shots at a single-day NRA Qualification Match, the lead build-up using my 370 grain T/C Maxi-Balls is very noticeable! So I tell you this from personal experience!

One more tip: when using a bore-sized brush with regular gun cleaners in a muzzleloader, it's always a good idea to cover the muzzle as you extract the brush to keep the solvent from flying all over your new Cabela's T-shirt! Don't ask me how I know this :redface: . It's also a good idea to rotate the range rod to the right to keep the brush from being unscrewed from the rod and left in the bore :shocked2: :redface:

I don't know what I was thinking but I was asking because I have a renegade in the 1360 range and it has a really short rear adjustable sight..I was wondering if your guys early ones had the short sight on em..It is between 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" long and the later ones are 2" long..
