Hello all! I’m brand new to muzzle loading but I’m completely enthralled by it. I’m down around the Annapolis MD area and was wondering who else is in MD? Also plan on building a simple kit for my first rifle and would appreciate any suggestions on any good kit with a lower price tag (the wife isn’t as enthusiastic about this new adventure as I am ha). Thank you all!

If at all possible it would be to your advantage to find a muzzle loader club or mentor just to see what is involved, and to observe the loading and firing procedure. Look at all types, cap, flintlock, rifled or smooth bore. It will make your adventure more rewarding and less expensive, rather than unfavorable and money dumped down a rabbit hole. It is rewarding when done right, good luck.

Welcome. It is an excellent pastime. Read up on the info found on this site. Use the search feature to find post on certain subjects, calibers, smooth bores, rifled bores, flint, or precession, and all manner of historical info. Trust me there is some entertaining and great knowledge on here that will burn hours of reading. Enjoy. I sure do.

I'm close to Brunswick, Harpers Ferry WVA. You missed a great antique arms show last month in Gettysburg :( They may have a spring show, I'm not sure. Check of PA gun shows should show it. A big show was always held in Baltimore  but the Wu Flu shut it down for 2020 and 2021. I hate Baltimore, I'm happy with going to Gettysburg even if means crossing the Mason Dixon Line and going into Yankee territory 😅

Welcome. "Low price" and "good kit" have a difficult time getting along. "Low-ish priced used rifle that needs care and attention" might be an option.
That said, I don't know what your concept of cheap/lower price is.
I've seen some fellows get older CVA rifles, refinish them, change the lock out (with some wood work needed for fit) and then refinish the lock and barrel.

My wife and I grew up in PA, her in Lancaster Co and me in York. Gettysburg was almost my backyard and I don’t believe I ever knew they had an antique gun show. I’ll definitely look into that, thank you!

Welcome - I'm from Easton. There used to be a nice show at the armory not far from the Mall though I haven't been there in years. Hate going over to the western shore - lol. Where do you plan to go shooting?

The associated gun clubs of Baltimore used to have a big range complex up near there and I used to belong to the Berwyn Rod and Gun club in Bowie. You might contact those people about gun shows within driving distance. Berwyn was a nice range but I don't know about it now as I moved from Md. years ago.

Well that’s another problem I planned on facing later. My buddies and I usually go over to Delmarva Sporting but it’s a bit of a haul and with two little ones at home I’d like to find something a range a little closer to learn and shot at.

Thank you sir! I’d have to check them out.

Welcome. I am also from Maryland. A good club to belong to if you plan to build and shoot muzzleloaders is Marriottsville Muzzleloaders. They shoot at the Associated Gun Club ranges and have a pretty good bunch of members.
