Folks, I'm building a Pedersoli flintlock kit and am looking at suggestions for polishing the brass hardware. I used progressively finer wet 'n' dry sandpaper down to 2000 grit, but I still see very fine scratches. Maybe I should just leave it as is? Thanks.

You might go finer still on the emery paper. You can then use a buffing wheel with some jewelers' rouge.

File it with a fine file. Perhaps burnish it with some coarse steel wool. Don't worry about file marks that remain. There, now your brass is polished better than most brass hardware was in the 18th century!

If you want to be able to have your wife put on her makeup by looking at your triggerguard, you're going to have to go to using paste abrasives and buffing wheels.

Try mother's polish or simichrome as you have most of the hard work already done. Then if you don't like the shine you can always redo. Good Journeys

I have and use a dedicated buffing wheel mounted on a motor.
It looks like a bench grinder but it is a buffing machine.
I use various rouges to get the shine I want. It only takes seconds.
You can polish to just about any level of gloss you want.

After sanding down the brass with progressivly finer grits of sandpaper (down to 400 grit), I buff the brass with a polishing compound that I found at an auto parts store. I believe the stuff is called, "Wizard Polish" but I will have to double check to see if that is it. It looks like pink cotton candy. Works like a charm...
