Anyone out there ever come up with a decent buck and ball shooting target for a woodswalk? I know this is mostly a useless load for anything but a military situation but I would like to see it used in a match.....Mark

I don't know why it is useless. It is kind of fun to watch all the dust fly when you shoot something with a buck and ball load. My Bess will really make a mess down range with 90 gr of 2F, a .715 ball and 4 or 5 - 00 buck over it. Make sure that the buck is on top of the ball instead of underneath so it won't jam as it comes out. It kicks more but it really is fun.

Just remember, if the range officer doesn't say single round ball only, buck and ball is an option.

Ive fired buck and ball too. What I'm looking for is a good target to use in a smoothbore match that you can score it with.Buck and ball is mostly illegal in most hunting and not a good killing shot on large game(Maybe point blank)If you hit it with the large ball you don't need the buck, while large game being hit with a single buckshot will mean a slow death for the animal. In war a slow death or crippling shot was about all that was needed,so it was used....Mark

Interesting. Does anyone know how common (or uncommon) buck & ball was used in U.S. conflicts? I am talking about Revolutionary and Civil Wars. If there is a site that explains the usage and perhaps the history of the load, I would like to take a look. I am generally aware that the load was available but I don't know when (history time frame) or how it was used.

There were some targets advertised in Muzzleloader mag recently. They were depictions of Huron and Mohawk warriors and a Highland clansman. They were expensive at $6 each and were nice enough to be called art and put on the wall instead of shot at. The woman who drew them acknowledged this, but stated that she intended them to be targets. They looked to be roughly 3/4 man sized and would certainly spice up a woodswalk. Outside of a leathal hit or not, I'm not sure how you would score multiple shooters though.
