I’m awaiting the book “how to build percussion lock rifle or pistol”. I couldn’t afford the book “ how to build double barrel muzzleloading shotgun”. My goal is to build a percussion single barrel shotgun, then attempt the double. I can’t find much documentation, or texts on it. Does anyone here know how the barrel plug and nipple are designed? Or where I could find schematics, blueprints, or information?

for a single barrel gun the gunsmith of Greenville county, recreating the American long rifle, and the art of building a pennsylvania long rifle would give you the basics for how build a fowler. I would check track of the wolf for plans that are close to what you are wanting to build.

When you say plans, what do you mean? I have seen books, parts, and tools for sale. I haven’t seen plans, or any kind of information that I didn’t have to purchase. Is there something I’m missing, or are you just telling me what would be appropriate to buy from the website?

Shotgun gets built about the same way as a rifle. Plenty of books, videos, etc out there about how it all goes together.

Ok, I guess I will wait for my book to arrive in the mail. I was hoping to find something supplemental online.

If you can't afford a book, you can't afford to make a gun.
I can afford all of it, but it doesn’t make sense to rush out and buy 5 different books at one time. Some of the books aren’t made anymore, so the prices can be 50-150. (These prices dont include the books mentioned by sean.)
There’s no reason not to want to find pictures and information online, before my purchases come in the mail.

Track of the Wolf sells full scale schematics of many black powder firearms. They are reasonably priced, I've bought several.

My friend and mentor built over 200 muzzleloading shotguns over a 50 year time frame. All single barrels, 95% percussion.

He used modern shotgun barrels with the breech cut off and a plug installed. His specialty was Trap guns; his favorite barrel were 36" full choke barrels, leaving a barrel about 32".

Making a double barrel is extremely complicated. Much easier to get a set of used black powder barrels and restock it, but even that is a major undertaking.

Buy "RECREATING THE DOUBLE BARREL MUZZLE LOADING SHOTGUN" by William R. Brockway. It's about the only way to figure out how to build a SXS shot gun . I used it as a guide when I was building them. For single barrels look at hawken rifles, they are breeched about the same way.
Google "English shot guns" Also "Nock Breech" or "chambered breech". Look at Rock Island auction Co and look at their past auctions.

That’s the book I started looking into, but I couldn’t justify spending the 150. Not because I can’t afford it, but because In a matter of weeks it went from 50 dollars to 150. Was brockways book worth it?

Any reason why he didn’t just buy barrel blanks? What your friend did is exactly what I want to do, but I would like to tackle the sxs one day for shooting clays in a five stand type setup.

When he started building muzzleloading shotguns, in the 1970s, there were very few barrels available that weren't Fowler barrels. He built contemporary guns, for competition, only skeet shooters wanted cylinder bores.

He mainly used full choked barrel, for shooting handicap trap.

The 3rd reason is he bought barrels for under $20 each for decades. Mainly from parts dealers. He bought every 10 Ga. Marlin 36" barrel that Numrich had in stock.

Almost everyone he built a shotgun for shot 5 stand trap, singles. I've shot it several times, with my 10 bore underhammer he built. It has a Marlin goose gun barrel.

I also have a mule ear 12 bore with vent rib barrel and screw in chokes.... remember these were built for competition, not juried rendezvous.

You should look around or put out a "Want to buy" add out. I'd watch ebay too. I found the book an absolute must for SXS guns. I bought mine from Brockway when he was my room mate at WKU NMLRA gun building class in 1987. Probably paid $35 or $40.

If you can't find one I'll loan you mine for a while.

Juried rendezvous? These were muzzleloader shotguns? I can imagine that many other people, besides me, would want to reload through the muzzle. This is exciting to me. I must not be crazy for wanting to shoot black powder muzzleloader for clays.

Holy cow!!! Lol that’s awesome. You knew him? I’m glad I joined this forum. I guess it’s obvious the pros and authors on the topic would congregate on a forum for muzzleloading.

That would be awesome! I will try to find one through those methods first. Thank you!

I did look on eBay and Amazon btw. The price is 150 or more every commercially available website (if eBay and Amazon are commercially available and a help wanted ad isn’t).

I said that because some get excited about modern items like vent ribs on a muzzleloading shotguns.

These absolutely loaded from the muzzle. As I said; the breech was cut off, a breech plug made and fitted, a nipple drum installed. Then it is fitted to a stock, a lock and trigger installed, a buttplate or recoil pad, and guard and you're in business.

There is no problem using over powder and shot wads in a choked barrel. You just can't use the thick felt wads.

I've seen many shooters break 25 straight at the trap and skeet range. The best ever was 2 shooters using original flintlock doubles at skeet break 25 straight twice. On the 3rd tiebreaker one bird was dropped!! A standing ovation by all present.

Me?? I'm lucky to break 15 at trap, horrible at skeet.

I'd like to follow this thread all the way to the finished shotgun. It should be a fun and challenging project. Kind of like shooting 5 stand. The best I've done is 19 with my 16 gauge German SxS. A muzzleloader would be even more humbling!

I was clarifying it was all muzzleloaders because I want aware there were people that shot clays with muzzleloaders. I figured your friend was making both muzzleloaders and over and unders. That’s awesome though! Exciting to hear there is a like minded community.

I don’t know what vent ribs are, but I know I want to come up with a way to adjust a sxs on the fly, wether it’s by some sort of adjustable pad, or premade inserts, but I need to learn how to make the basics first.
