There was an anomaly (like "Huston - we have an anomaly) in Oregon today. The sun came out, so Rebel and I went out and shot our smooth bores for a bit. This was the first chance Rebel had to shoot his, and it's nice to report that all went well. He shot some fair groups at 25 yards, and I won't talk about how I did. We did run one quick experiment with buckshot today. Reb loaded with 80 grains of FFg and 15 #4 buckshot. At twenty five yards there was a huge hole in the middle and only about half the balls hit the paper. Then moving the target into 15 yards, it really did a good job, and any deer or turkey shot at that range would be in serious trouble. I enclose some photos showing Reb and the 15 and 25 yard targets. Note the shadows caused by the sunshine.

Cowhand,
I love the pictures. The sunshine was particularly nice. Now I assume that the targets were of the buckshot loads. Tell Rebel to keep having fun with his smoothbore. :)
God bless.

Today was my first chance to shoot the N.W. Tradegun since i got it. Don't get a lot of sunny days around here this time of year i guess. Anyway, i was happy with the way it performed for a first try. I loaded 80 grs. of Goex 2f powder, an over powder and lubed cushion wad, then a patched .600 round ball. First shot was in the black and the next one was right next to it. Then i got five more shots into a group a couple inches across. Next i need to try it at 50 yds and work up some shot loads for it. Going to take it turkey hunting if i can get a good shot load worked out for it. Plan to use it next year for deer and possibly elk if i get drawn for one. Never had to swab the bore in it at all. The #4 buckshot loads were a disappointment though. At 25 yds the pattern was pretty spread out but at 15 yds it grouped all 16 #4 buckshot on the target paper. Hope to get out and do some more shooting with it soon.

Congradulations on the "sunny day"!! :haha:

Is yore NWTG one'a North Star's??

Rollingb, no, it is a Track Of The Wolf N.W. Tradgeun with a 36" barrel. I bought it from the original owner/so called builder. Then i pretty much rebuilt it, sanding a lot of extra wood of the forend, removing the brass tacks he had put in the buttstock and filling the holes with Walnut filler, restained it and Tru oiled. Rebuilt the lock completely. Fixed some of his inletting goofs. It ain't perfect, but it has Character, and it seems to shoot good. Had good fast ignition and seems accurate enough. Happy with it.

Looks like a terrific day. I know how you've been complaining about the inisistant rain from our correspondence.
: If I can make a suggestion about loads, try a patched RB, then 1/2 doz of those small buckshot then a thin card of cloth patch to keep the shot inside - and shoot it at a 20 or 25 yard target. You might be pleased with the results- or not, as the case may be. From the Bess, the results were fairly good using patched RB and 3 to 5 .35 cast balls. The shot usualy accompanied the ball fairly closely, making it a deadly load. This prompted me to purchase a box(4 lbs.) of .350" Hornady shot.
: I've never been a fan of low velocity shot for deer. The #4 are typically only .28 cal. and the normal 3 dram load with ball and shot would be 1,200fps or lower- probably lower. On a fat deer, they're likely not to go through a rib into the near lung, let alone penetrate both lungs. My Cousin tried SSG & 00 (.32 and .33 cal.) modern high vel buckshot at 1,300fps on Whitetails in Southwestern Ontario and gave them up as useless in comparrison to full sized slugs - in power and accuracy.

Daryl, i have tried the buck and ball loads and wasn't too impressed. Cowhand, the fella i went shooting with, told me of a friend of his that shot a deer with a .10 or .12 ga and buckshot at about 40-50 yds and only 3 of them hit the deer, and not one of them penetrated the skin. They bruised him, but didn't go through the skin. They know this because one of the other guys with them killed it with his BP rifle. Not sure i would trust buckshot on anything bigger than coyotes, and then only at close range.

Rebel,.... Consider'n the work you had to do to yore NWTG,.... I've got to ask this, does TOTW take into consideration the "less than" proper build'n job when they appraise such rifleguns and do they adjust ther ask'n price accordinly??

Rollingb, i didn't buy it from Track, but from the guy that bought it from them and then put it together. I am sure that had Track had the gun they probably would have sent it back to him and not tried to sell it, or wouldn't have given him much for it. I bought it through Guns America sight unseen. I almost returned it after seeing it, but decided i could fix it up since i got the gun for less than what Track wants for the kit now. I am hapy enough with it now. It does shoot good, and it doesn't look bad now either. Like i said before, it has some Character. ::

Thanks Rebel,.... I had to ask, 'cause I am always innerested in "rebuilds" if the price is right.

Hey Rolingblock - here's one that sold on Track's site for wellover $3,000, last July. It was made by my bro. I've shot that rifle and it's exceptionally accurate. It's the first rifle I've seen Taylor shoot a 3" offhand group at 100 meters with(5 shots - tee cup size).

Daryl,.... Thet is one beautiful rifle and well worth the $3000.00 price.

When I mentioned "rebuilds", I ment guns thet some novice put together thet can still actualy be "rebuilt" into a good gun by a different owner with some "know how".

I can see "no room" fer improvements on yore brother's rifle,.... he is truely "gifted"!! :applause: ::

Yeah, I knew what you meant. I just HAD to show you guys this rifle - he is gifted & came highly recommended by Don Getz to another fella ordering barrels from Don. Don told him he was "Most Fortunate" to have Taylor making him a rifle.
: It's the double Flinter that blows me away. Sorry for the file size, but the locks need to be seen up close. Even the plate bevels are engraved. The locks are John Bailes (L&R) from Trackofthewolf. Ignition is very fast indeed with the White Lightening liners. Note the tapered wrist, instead of being parallel. The breeches are recessed to this can happen. A well, the frizzen's side is inlet into the side of the barrel, slightly, to skinny it up as much as possible. A pair of 12 boes is fairly wide.
: Of course, the other lock is identical. The owner hasn't shot ball in it yet, but I'd be hunting EVERYTHING from Moose to Grooce with it. At 6 1/2 lb.s it is a VERY fast swinging gun. 3 1/2 drams would handle the ball's charge just fine, I am sure.

Gorgeous piece! Perfect proportions, to my eye. I'd like one proportioned and shaped just like that, but in "poor-boy" level of trim (or lack of it, I should say) in .32. I especially like the cast-off on the stock. Ya don't see that every day. Hopefully, someday I'll build myself one....But I'll start with something simpler first.... :RO:
