I got a 35 year old Lyman Deerstalker that someone neglected a bit. Cleaned it up so its' respectabe-looking, except for that awful rubber buttpad.

I'm looking for a steel buttplate to fit without the need for cutting the stock or refinishing the wood. The 35 year old finish is good as-is & it's too short to configure for a regular Hawken-type buttplate.

I'm willing to do whatever shaping is needed on the buttplate & a little wood fitting, as needed.

Hey AZ !!!

Sound's like your pretty handy with your hand's so why not carve your own from an off-color wood ???

Be creative and enjoy !!!

Lots of steel shotgun plates out there, tho not that thick. Maybe one of those would work. TOW as some, E-bay sometimes, MidwayUSA...a thought Tom

I made one like you're describing for my daughter's little rifle. I used a scrap piece of mild steel plate, maybe 3/16" thick. First I sanded off the rust, then cut it close to the shape of the butt, then mounted it with two screws, then traced around, removed it and cut it just a hair bigger than the final fit. Remounted it on the wood, contoured the back kind of oval with files, then filed around the perimeter to match the wood perfectly. The sides ended up around 1/16", while the center was still around 3/16". Polished it up and done.

You can probably do the same without ever touching the wood, just takes constant checking and a little patience. Good luck. Bill
