Yeah, I hate to say it, but for a few hundred dollars they're not about to get a multi-jurisdictional investigation started. If it was all done locally, you could probably get the local police to handle it, but because it crosses state lines, they would have to be quite a lot of moving parts to prosecute. It's not even a legal "firearm" anyway, so the ATF wouldn't care about a stolen hunk of metal.

Sending a pair of detectives to the location that the scammer is would probably cost more than you got scammed out of.

It's an unfortunate situation, and it's happened to me before as well so I 100% feel your pain. My advice would be to write this off as a loss and lesson, and try not to lose sleep over it.

I sincerely hope that I'm wrong, and that the FBI crashes down on this a-hole with everything they've got though.
My wife works with the alphabet people all the time on ID theft and fraud. Unless it is a large amount they won't do anything about it. Too overloaded. Nobody will do anything about a ripoff like this.

To keep a very long story short, my wife's aunt and neice (slimeballs of people), forged a notary signature, and sold their mothers (with severe dementia) house under fraudulent circumstances, and used the money to buy whatever they wanted. There's a paper trail a mile long, multiple witnesses, and physical evidence that corroborates what happened. The local police won't touch it because the people who did it moved, and the federal government doesn't seem to have any interest in trying to recover a half million dollars from an old woman, they haven't even been interviewed by police, neither the victim nor the perpetrators.

What the f*** kind of world do we live in where you can steal a home from a woman, with no legal repercussions.

This makes me so made I have to rant.
My experience buying from people on this forum have been extremely positive, and I prefer it to, say, the eBay of firearms. With the closing of most mom and pop stores it's difficult to find those rare items nerds like me are interested in without using the internet.
If the US can afford to send billions $$ in 'aid' to foreign countries it can do something about mail and internet fraud. There are office buildings in India full of people sitting at computer terminals scamming old ladies like my mother out of tens of thousands of dollars every minute of every day. My identity was stolen twice, once, I think, by a clerk in a hotel I checked into (you have to show them your ID). It was used to rent a car that wasn't returned. The police caught the guy, and let him go, let him drive off in the car! It took years and a private investigator to clear my name. I once had to hire a lawyer on the other side of the country to get money for a sale I made to a LAWYER there. Before hiring my lawyer I talked to her boss in the law firm where she worked, and his attitude was "sucks to be you."
There was a lawyer here that built an obscenely large house. He used a small contractor to do some of the work which, due to the scope of the project, was a chance for the contractor to make a lot of money and up his reputation in the community. On the other hand if he tied up that much time and money and there was a problem with payment it meant disaster. Payment did not come and communication broke down so the contractor hired the lawyer here with the biggest name (he was Morgan Freeman’s business partner) to help him get what he was due. They set up an appointment and got everyone together at the office of the attorney who owed the debt. All of the negotiations ended with the attorney saying that he was in court for something every day for something anyway so the contractor needed to go on and sue him and he would keep it dragging on forever. When he asked the contractor if he was financially strong enough to handle that, the contractor saw that his life was ruined anyway so he pulled a pistol and killed the attorney. People need to watch who they screw over, they may just pick on the wrong guy.

Lawyers are like nuclear weapons — you have to have ‘em because the other side has ‘em, but if you use them, they eff everything up.

I think computers have IP addresses.

I think the Mods have access to the IP stuff.

A name can change, but the IP address will remain the same.
IP stands for "Internet Protocol". And actually if you are using a Wi-Fi network in your home you will have a different IP address on your computer than your internet provider will show on their records. They will only show an IP address going into your DSL or cable modem and do not have the granularity to tell you which computer that info actually went to.

Those IP addresses are associated with specific hardware (and thus accounts), but here's the rub: if you turn off your computer or re-boot it or the DSL or cable modem, and you are NOT on a fiber optic feed (FIOS), your IP address will change (not sure about FIOS because it's not available in my area). They are doled out automatically by the company that supplies your internet service as they are needed unless you have a T-1 or better dedicated line. So IP addresses aren't the super reliable identifier that they once were back in the 90's. Yes, they do refer to a specific account at a specific location but since that can change multiple times during a day it's like trying to find a needle in a mountain of hay...not a haystack, a mountain of hay.

And then of course if you use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for internet security in your financial dealings or general browsing and internet use to protect your personal information, that hides your actual current IP address from the internet entirely and sends out one of the many IP addresses for the city and country you choose to appear. Again, even the VPN itself doesn't know which one you are on. If you are using a VPN like Express VPN or Google VPN the IP address just points to ExpressVPN, GoogleVPN, or whatever company you use and whatever city and country you want it to say you are in.

So IP addresses are no longer the great identifier they once were.

I have been in business most of my life except for 2 years in the army. Many people have tried to screw me. I never let them go. Typical tactic is offer about 60% because they know it's going to cost you 40% to collect it. I never take it I tell them I'd rather give the money to my lawyer, I like him better than you. Some times I've chased them for years. To many people just let them get away with it and take the 60%. Most times with interest and cost they end up paying more than they originally owed, of course I have to pay my attorney but I didn't let them steal from me.

I had my own business for 40 years so I know what you are saying. I am a great guy to deal with ....unless you try to take advantage of me or try to screw me out of my money. Then I am like a grizzly bear on fire.
