Definitely buy from a retailer.
No one has a Lyman GPH or a GPR anymore, since they've been discontinued. The only other I've seen was from Griz44mag who has passed (God rest his soul) but I don't believe he ever got his sold before he passed. The thread just stopped.

I've happily purchased two long guns on this site. Very happy. And I'd also like to point out the fullstock .45 that VA Hawken has for sale on this site. Sweet rifle!!

Personally I look at what the old timers put up for sale here. They have been around awhile. If they have been around on this forum for x number of years im willing to bet their integrity level is pretty good whom would want their name smeared out of dishonesty? Treat others the same way you would want to be treated..unfortunately everyone does not work like that...

Just to be clear, I’ve bought lots of muzzleloaders on this site or the sister site and every transaction has gone smoothly. I’ve also walked away from a couple that didn’t seem right.

I recently sold him a gun. Like you he was cautious and asked questions. I'd suggest keeping an open dialogue and discuss the process.
He told me he just got his new flintlock from you. That in and of itself made me feel a little better. Now that you've stepped up for him helps even more. I just sent him a PM about my concerns, I'm keeping an open conversation and mind. Thanks Boomstick

One could easily do a People Finder. Or...ask for a phone number and do reverse lookup. Google addresses is your friend. Many verifiable ways to know whom and what you are dealing with. I personally would not put my integrity on the chopping block just to rip someone off..but thats me...

I agree. I'm not real computer literate. But I do know how to do a couple of your suggestions. Thanks Sussex

get his phone number, call and talk with him. at the very least you may make another friend. so far i have not had any bad transactions on the forum. except one that turned out to be a total scam. and a Psycho! dodged a bullet on that one.
When I sold my Rem .44 to a guy in Texas we did just that. Talked on the Phone. I told him I needed a week for the postal money order to clear. He had no issues. He wound up happy and so did i.

50 bucks to ship a rifle is dirt cheap these days.
True ... but can even be less! I just shipped out 2 (without insurance), where last time I checked or sent one out insured, USPS insurance was a fixed $15 for up to $600 and an added $1.75 for every $100 over that. Note those rates could have gone up.
  • One box was 60" long weighing 12-pounds and ran $30.15 via Ground Advantage and got there within +1-day of forecasted
  • The other was 72" long @ 17-pounds, delivered by GA on time, and ran $32.15
So a take-down, hooked breech T/C type could easily ship out for < $50 insured. Also, I sometimes cut people a deal on S/I and when I expect it to run > $60, I may say, 'Send $60 and I'll cover any charges over that.', but I do a lot of wheeling and dealing.

Thanks flint62. I'm starting to feel better about this transaction. I hate thinking ill of people , especially people I don't even know. I grew up in a piss ant town in Montana where ya knew everyone and a handshake was yer word and yer bond. It's hard livin in this modern day. Guess that's why we dream of the old days and BP.
