Look for a Bass Pro store in your area. The cost for BP is a little expensive, but it's nice to be able to walk out with a pound or two instead of having to pay hazmat and wait.

Oh, and don't just ask the guy at the gun counter for it. They don't know if they carry it or not. You have to check with the store manager. In fact, I've had the guy at the gun counter tell me they don't carry the stuff, but the guy at the archery counter went back and got me a pound of 3f. Funny how that works.

According to ATF regs, you CAN legally own up to 50lbs, no more. Hasn't changed and I doubt it will.

Bass Pro in Oklahoma City does not carry blackpowder. There is no powder at all on display-None!!! All of their powder, smokeless, BP or otherwise; is stored outside somewhere. The Bass Pro counter people blame the OK City fire marshal. That does not compute because other stores in the area display smokeless powder and BP substitutes.

One can assume that they mean an indivodual, or they would state "household" or something to that effect.

Keep in mind that you may be subject to a State law that limits you to less.

Black powder is an explosive material for purposes of Federal explosives laws and regulations. However, the law exempts from regulation commercially manufactured black powder in quantities not exceeding 50 pounds (as well as percussion caps, safety and pyrotechnic fuses, quills, quick and slow matches, and friction primers) intended to be used solely for sporting, recreational, or cultural purposes in antique firearms as defined in 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(16) or in antique devices exempted from the term "destructive device" in 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(4). However, persons engaged in the business of importing, manufacturing, or dealing in black powder in any quantity must have a Federal explosives license, and comply with recordkeeping, storage and conduct of business requirements. [18 U.S.C. 841(c), 841(d), 845(a)(5); 27 CFR 555.11: definitions of "explosives" and "explosive materials", 555.141(b)]

He is saying that there is none on display....Given the amount that they probably have on hand , yes it would meet special BATF storage requirements. In an outbuilding.

Basspros didn't used to carry BP here either but they started some time ago. It isn't uncommon there at Basspros to tell people the don't carry it when in fact they do and the person you talked to just didn't know. Best to ask the dept manager.

:cursing: Just was at gun show yesterday to buy some smokeless powder and was told that I could only buy limited amount Was informed that all powder sales are now being governed by are great FEDS. I was only allowed to buy 1lb and if larger 8lbs are limited to only one.

Don't know if this is what the salesman was referring to but the BATF recently tried to reclassify "that other kind of powder" as an explosive. This is IMO another attempt to make it more difficult for people to load their own ammo. Many stores sell smokeless and bp subs but not real black because of all the hoops they have to jump through to sell it. The last I heard the NRA got involved and stopped this. I didn't read all the posts so if this was already addressed then ignore it.

My local Bass pro didn't display it either. But they did have it in stock in the back. I had to ask the manager of the store because most of the employees don't know they sell it.

Recently the Bass Pro gun department did put a display of BP out with the Pyrodex and other stuff. Just to show they DO carry it locally.

I buy powder at rendezvous and shoots, usually a pound at a time. Some clubs will sell it, or some guy I have known for yrs. $16.00/lb.

It's too bad other stores that sell real black powder don't do that too.

The GOEX, Swiss, Jacks Battle or whatever brand container cannot have any real black powder in it but there is no law that says the container can't sit on the shelf.

As it stands now, ALL black powder at a store must be locked in a Federally approved, locked vault.

That's why most stores don't have it sitting on a shelf for the customer to see.
