The Basspro near me seems to be only interested in selling boats and clothing. Gun inventory in the library non existent and smokeless ammo stock is ok, but black powder stock is limited to a 3’ wide by 5 ft high shelf. No powder, caps, some round balls and that’s about it. I have to order on line and have it shipped to the store for pickup….IF they can find it elsewhere. Ugh.
"The Basspro near me seems to be only interested in selling boats and clothing."

If that is what sells in that store, would you stock what does not sell?

To do so would be the Forrest Gump school of management.

So a Doc's appointment today, my last for the current hip replacement and to schedule my next. Cabela's is on the way home, so I stop in to buy some T7 3F as they have some and with the military discount and member rebate on the card, it isn't too bad of a price.

I ask the clerk if they have much of it. He affirms that they have several cases. Have you had much demand for it? No, not since hunting season is over. As I am going to be working up loads, relatively heavy, for 54 cal and 58 cal, I ask for three bottles.

Answer, we can't. I can only sell you two. ???????? Why is that????? Well so everybody can get some and we don't run out....What????? Are you guys capitalists or are we in a socialist country. You have it and in no small amount, there is no demand, I have the money and need it. Well, that wouldn't be fair. WHAT?????? Well, sir, you can come back tomorrow and buy 2 more bottles. How is that fair????? Well, you would only be buying two. Get the manager. Sir, I am the manager for reloading and powder. Screw you guys. Keep it all and choke on it.

I went down the street and found three bottles for just a little more...Oh, and he is a capitalist, he sold them to me.
I worked at the Rogers Minnesota Cabela's before Bass Pro bought them.

I'm no fan of rationing, but the decision to do so many times came from a level above the department managers.

All I ask is perhaps don't shoot the messenger.

I did business with Cabelas for about as many years that they have been in business. The grandson was about to make his first deployment so I took him to buy his first Winchester lever rifle at Cabelas. I collect them and he wanted one of his own so that was my mission. We found a nice collectors edition and he did all the paperwork so when came time to pay I just pulled cash out of my pocket and handed it to my little paratrooper. The Cabelas employee saw that and came unglued about a straw purchase. That fool said he could have me jailed for such and act. I let him know that before I went to jail for that nonsense I would be charged for a lot more. Never bought from or entered a Cabelas since.
From the employee's perspective the whole straw purchase thing is a minefield.

First, there was no reason for that Cabela's employee to come unglued over your transaction, and the only way anybody could have been jailed was if it was an actual criminal-type straw purchase.

That having been said, the employee would have at least been reprimanded and potentially fired if not treating it as a straw purchase. We had employees that were reprimanded over misplaced commas in the firearm definition on 4473's.

You should see how they are here in Oregon. Due to current wait times with the state police, Cabels is dropping the sale after 30 days and not returning the full payment. The state is over 32,000 deep in background checks.
As of yesterday the Local LGS is saying its well over 50K backlogged (and climbing) and they are NO longer is giving wait time estimates at all. I can't imagine the amount of sales that the Portland idiots have caused both in and out of legal purview.

When the Cabelas opened in my area it was a pleasure to visit. Each department had at least one or two clerks who knew the subject: fishing, firearms, reloading, etc. They enjoyed talking about matters and showing newcomers the basics. And they had some leeway to get the customer a good deal. Then Bass Pro bought them out and turned it into another Dick's Sports. Within a couple of months, the knowledgeable salesmen were gone, replaced by stockers who MIGHT be able to tell you where an item is but nothing about the item. They are nice enough but they know store procedures, not shooting or fishing.

I still go there once in a while if I know they have a specific item at a reasonable price. But the days of just wandering around in there for fun are long gone.
It started even before BP had anything to do with it. After the Cabela brothers got out, corporate pencil pushers who weren't sportsmen and had no desire to be started to institute "rules" for all the stores. Several years ago I stopped at the Cabelas near Owatonna, MN for some left wing feathers for fletching arrows. Right handed traditional shooters generally use left wing feathers. All they had were right wing feathers, and most of the traditional archery gear they had once carried had disappeared. I did pick up a couple of other items and on the bottom of the receipt was a link to a customer satisfaction survey. I filled it out and didn't hold back. A couple days later the manager of the store called me! He was very apologetic when I expressed my disappointment at what had become of a once favorite store. He explained that corporate had mandated that all stores carry the exact same inventory on the floor. I asked if the Texas stores had ice fishing jigs and he said, "Yes, every store has the same thing." They could all order whatever was in their catalog, but only could display what corporate deemed appropriate. He said if I called ahead a week, he could have what I wanted waiting for me at customer service. I explained that driving an hour one way would cost way more than shipping, so I would have no reason to enter the store. Therefore any impulse buys were not going to happen. I haven't bought from them since. Bass Pro did nothing to improve the situation. I told him they were going to go the way of Herter's. He reluctantly agreed.

Last 2 times i wandered into the "collection grotto" the rep there had little clue as to what they were selling., $800 91/30s and $3000 p38.s.

if it's there and you have the money buy it, and buy as much as you can, if this A33 hole in office now has not taught you a lesson shame on you. Nothing is going to get better. It's going downhill fast. I could care less about the you're a hoarder crowd, when your throwing rocks I will still be shooting and hunting. I am not a fan of either bass pros, cabelas or dicks but if they have what I want I will get it.
Just returned from visiting one of our sons in Florida.

While there and checking out the gun shops I found two, yes two 1000 count bricks of large rifle primers. I haven't seen any large rifle primers in a year in any of the dozen-plus stores I frequent regularly.

They were $110/brick and the two people I checked with back home were more than happy to accept my offer of bringing them back.

Outrageous price compared to three or four years ago? Of course.
Can these people now actually shoot their firearms? Of course.

These were not shooters that didn't plan ahead. They planned ahead and had significant stock on their loading bench. It's just that now after a few years of poor supply they have used up what stock they had.

These are shooters that realize the old price structure is gone.

Unfortunately that's exactly what BATFE tells the FFL's is a straw purchase. He's doing the paperwork, you're providing the cash. FWIW my small town LGC has denied purchases because some known felon thug comes in looking for an unmentionable with his babymomma doing the same thing you guys did.

Should have slid him the dinero before you guys went in and had him given you back the change when it was over.

Exactly, Why does the Social Security Administration need 240,000 rounds of HP 9 MM??? Hollow point?!?!? It's prohibited by the Geneva Convention and we are signatories!!!
Dont you remember Fema under OBama got 9 Billion rounds of 45 ACP hollow pooints , why did they need that, and where is that stored.

I can vouch for this focus on watching for straw purchases as a current employee of Cabela's. It's an offense that can get you fired and some outfitters do need the work (for me it's a hobby job.). It's a tough call and personally I'd hope I'd not become "unglued," but I'd sure as h*ll call the manager in to settle this.

Lancaster Archery Supply. I get my pointy stuff from them now. SM

You know, it is always so enjoyable an experience to be mocked and made fun of and laughed at in front of a group of your peers while you point out their mistake...Not enough to simply point out the mistake ... gotta be condescending while doing it. Especially when the perp is a moderator and staff member with 12 years experience on this forum
Really made my day...thx

You brought up an inaccurate argument stemming from an inaccurate source. Sorry if you feel that pointing that out is somehow mocking you, and condescending.

Huh, that comes to 271 bullets for each person in this country.

Might want to check with your source to confirm your numbers.

Duh, if CCI and Remington are making that many rounds for the Govt., no wonder there are no caps being made.
