So a Doc's appointment today, my last for the current hip replacement and to schedule my next. Cabela's is on the way home, so I stop in to buy some T7 3F as they have some and with the military discount and member rebate on the card, it isn't too bad of a price.

I ask the clerk if they have much of it. He affirms that they have several cases. Have you had much demand for it? No, not since hunting season is over. As I am going to be working up loads, relatively heavy, for 54 cal and 58 cal, I ask for three bottles.

Answer, we can't. I can only sell you two. ???????? Why is that????? Well so everybody can get some and we don't run out....What????? Are you guys capitalists or are we in a socialist country. You have it and in no small amount, there is no demand, I have the money and need it. Well, that wouldn't be fair. WHAT?????? Well, sir, you can come back tomorrow and buy 2 more bottles. How is that fair????? Well, you would only be buying two. Get the manager. Sir, I am the manager for reloading and powder. Screw you guys. Keep it all and choke on it.

I went down the street and found three bottles for just a little more...Oh, and he is a capitalist, he sold them to me.
I had a guy at a gun store tell me he could only give me two boxes of .22 (during the pandemic) I said "give them to me, then". He did and - I handed them right back and told him that I was "giving" them back to him so he could understand the difference between giving (largess) and buying. I then told him I did not feel right accepting his gift, but that I would just go down the street and buy them form someone who understood the process. And I did!

Gentlemen and Ladies, if I might add some perspective from the other side of the Cabela's Gun Counter, I'd say the vast majority of interactions I have with customers are positive. People are happy to be buying a firearm or related item. They understand we have to follow ATF rules. As for purchase limits, my thoughts are that they are designed to allow more customers access to scarce products. In general I'd say if you begin our interaction in a positive manner, it'll be reciprocated. I had one customer who explained to me he'd worked at Lowes over the pandemic time and said he'd noticed the civility of the customers decrease. Perhaps that's true and I try not to add to the problem.

I get that hoarding is a problem, and does hurt recruitment in our hobby as a whole, but there needs to be some situational awareness by the retailer as well. It's not like the OP was asking to buy everything they had, and by their own admission they were in a low demand period for the powder. If the guy wanted 3 cans instead of 2, the manager should have said "thank you for the business".

For years, at every opportunity I have purchased ammo (a tin of caps, pound of powder, etc ) whether I “needed” it or not. I buy it so I am well stocked regardless of the situation. I do not sell it. I am always well stocked and have never paid scalper prices.
Now, for those of you angry at others who sell items at scalper prices - you shouldn’t be in that situation, you have only yourselves to blame.

a week ago my brother bought a muzzleloader revolver at cabelas in okc and he had to fill out paperwork. when he questioned them they said it was their policy now

Yes, that policy went into effect after Cabela's sold a black powder revolver to a convicted felon who used the gun to commit murder.

"The plaintiff’s complaint alleged that the retailer violated Ohio law by selling a black powder gun – a replica of an antique Army .44 caliber revolver – to an Orrville man prohibited from possessing firearms due to a felony conviction of violence. Often referred to as muzzleloaders, black powder guns use modern materials and historical firearm technology, which includes handloading the black powder and the ammunition into the muzzle of the weapon. Although black powder guns are loaded differently, once loaded they fire just like any modern firearm. As seen in the death of Bryan Galliher, while the technology is archaic, its impact is still lethal._

I have a friend who has a basement full of ammunition. He is "prepared" for the attack that he is sure will come [from U.S. Army]. He also has more than 10 military style rifles. I once asked him how many he could shoot at one time. He got a very blank look on his face and changed the subject. He lives waaaaay out in a forested area. He could probably sell you 20K rounds of several different calibers. :horseback:

Phone call to Cabela's - "do you have any Ballistol?" Response - "what is that?" I explained including the color of the can. "I will go look." 3-4 minute wait. "Yes we have it." I drove the 35 minutes to Cabela's. Spent 5-6 minutes looking for the Ballistol. I asked one of the floor employees - "can you tell me where the Ballistol is located?" Response - "what is that?" I explained what it was and also told him I had called to confirm that they had Ballistol in stock and was assured they had it in stock. After walking around with the floor employee for another few minutes he went and asked someone else, who is suppose to know lots more, where the Ballistol was. Response - "what is that?" I again explained what it was and that I had called to confirm that they have Ballistol in stock on the shelf. Again after walking around with him for another few minutes he goes and asked someone else, who is suppose to know more than he does, where the Ballistol was. Response - "well if you have looked over here or over there we don't have any. We usually don't stock Ballistol so it is likely we don't have any, in fact I can't remember the last time we had any."

No Cabela's or Bass Pro near me, so I've learned to deal with local folks. I like the mom n pop stores. Doesn't take long to build a relationship with them. One sells to me at cost + $2 and the other gives me a 10% discount.

Besides...Rules are easily bent or broken. Went to Terre Haute to get some Yuengling beer. Wife n I had 6 cases in the shopping cart (we share with friends and family). Lady at the checkout said you can only have 3 cases of beer. Oh OK, in that case my wife is buying 3 cases and I'm buying 3 cases just check us out seperate or do we need to get a 2nd cart and go through seperate lines? She shook her head and checked us out in the same line, but seperate.

Beating the retarded idiots at their own game.

I get your point and wish you the best for your hip! But if Cabela's sold all they had to one rich fat-cat investor, then we'd be mad that they let one guy glom all of it. In other words, they may have been doing us all a favor by "paying it out" rather than let one or two make off with all of it. Just MHO. Good luck with your shooting!

As much as I like and want to support local privately owned businesses, much less the nationally owned chain stores, I just go to Amazon many times. I get fair prices, though not always, and it’s very convenient and delivered to my door. I have gotten my last two orders of two spray bottles of Ballistol that way, and will probably do so again.
Ballistol is hard to find locally and expensive.
