Let me rephrase the question. From what I understand both guns are made by Investarms. Are they both made with the same materials? Are the Cabelas barrels not as good as the Lyman barrels? Are the locks the same on both guns? I have been reading some of the old forums and I have noticed that some people have said to stay away from the Cabelas Investarms but have high praise for the Lyman. If they are both by the same company then what is the difference?

About $150.00.

And iron vs. brass furniture, different barrel lengths, one has a cap box, they are quite different guns. The Cabellas guns are way less expensive and that is why some don't take the time or expense to "fix 'em up" like the Lyman. In my opinion only the Cabellas guns are under rated. I still have mine from 1986 (.54 capper) and Robin shoots it like a champ. - well, she is a champ. I did replace the barrel 8-9 years ago with a GM but it was my fault that the original one went bad. It didn't hold to 20,000 rounds very well. :rotf: and once it started to get rust I couldn't stop it. I paid only $139 for it and it came with accessories back then. Clean it, oil it, it'll last forever.

Isn't the Cabela's Hawken pretty much a Lyman Trade Rifle with a cap box?

I've never owned one, but understand them to be pretty good rifles based on what I've heard from others.

Twist rate is not the same, GPR are 1in60 or 1in32, while hawken is 1in48. Can not say about the quality and finish, since I only had a GPR in my hands.

The Cabela's Hawken and the Lyman Trade Rifle are very similar. There are some small differences.

The Lyman GPR is a completely different rifle from either one of those.

I have two Cabela's hawkens, and they shoot great. Have killed numerous elk and deer with them. This summer I'm going to try prb's in them. Great gun.
P.S. both percussion, have never owned the other.

As Jethro224 said, the Cabelas Hawken is not comparable to the GPR but is like a Lyman Trade Rifle with a goofy patchbox added. Cabelas price is NOT less, right now Midsouth Shooters Supply has the Lyman rifle for nearly 100 dollars less than Cabelas Hawken. They have .50 & .54 caliber percussion in stock right now.
Also at Midsouth they have the Lyman GPR for only about 40 bucks more than the Cabelas Hawken.
I've never found Cabelas prices on guns to be very good. The only gun I ever got from Cabelas was my Blue Ridge about 20 years ago, that because Cabelas was the only source. Otherwise I've always found better prices elsewhere.

Right on. If It isn't on sale its too much. And on sale just means its worth a look. Larry

So, then I can take it that the parts are the same? Barrels, (rate of twist might be different but barrels are interchangeable)? Locks are interchangeable? One gun is not better than the other is basically what I'm asking. Thanks.

Cabelas sells an Investarms rifle which is made for them. It is not an exact duplicate of anything sold by Investarms or Lyman, but is similar to one model. It is unknown if the specifications are different, but nobody has mentioned any complaints regarding the quality or reliability that I have seen.

However, Mid South is a long time dealer of Lyman and has very attractive prices - has done this for many years. I would look at their website and compare before buying through Cabelas.

The closest to Cabelas:

1 in 48 barrel Rifle

What I would look at:

Great Plain Rifle

I say this because I am mostly a roundball shooter and thought the twist better for this use. I got one which does shoot roundballs well. However, we discovered that it also does a great job with Hornady 385 grain Great Plains bullets.

We also own a Deerstalker which is even better with a Hornady bullet, so we are believers in these guns.

Good luck with whatever you get!

I have a Lyman Trade rifle in flint and a Cabelas Hawken in percussion. They are fairly similar. As stated the Hawken has a patchbox, it also has a double set trigger. The Trade rifle has a single trigger. They are very similar in quality. The Trade rifle does have a nice fixed traditional dovetailed rear sight instead of the cheesy adjustable one that the Hawken has. Both are excellent shooters.

I have an Investarms, which is identicle to the Cabellas hawkin. I have had it since the early 80's. Mine had a chrome bore .58 cal.1-48, but I replaced the barrel with a 1-60 .54 Green mountain. I also took off the rubber pad and fitted a shotgun style brass butt plate, installed a T/C peep and blade front. I have never had a problem with it. Lock and triggers work fine. I paid $160.00 new.

Other than single- versus double-trigger, it sounds to me as though the differences between the Cabelas Hawken and the Lyman Trade rifle are mostly cosmetic.

The GPR is another thing altogether - a lot of guys like those and if you can get one for $40 more than a Cabela's Hawken, it might be your best bet, especially if you think you might sell it later. The GPR looks a lot more like a Hawken than either of the other two.

I have nothing to do with this sale.????
If you look in the "Classifieds" there is a great deal on a nice Lyman GPR for a very, very good price.
I can't understand why it is still there.

I don't find what he did with the barrel very attractive. Maybe others feel the same way. The bad part is he had it browned before doing that, and it looked good.

That's what kept me from buying it. If I had known he was going to sell it. I would have told him to leave it browned, and I would have bought it.

Yeah, I almost ordered one a couple of months ago. Good prices.
I wish they made the LH in a kit.

I already have a Cabelas Hawkens. I got it for Christmas. I was just wondering if it was made differently than the Lyman (Lesser quality).

I do not think that there is a significant difference in quality. They are just made to meet different design concepts.

If you take care of it and learn what it likes, it will serve you well.
