How useful are these guns for hunting and target? Seems dubious at best.

Seem like a novelty to me honestly. If I just wanted a noisemaker I’ll grab a blinderbuss.
If you actually do any hunting out of a canoe, which I have in the distant past, you will realize that short barreled guns are almost a must.

If you have two people in the canoe, which I always did, the short barrel is easier to lay down in the boat while paddling, pointed in a safe direction of course, and easier to keep from sweeping your mate.

How long or short however is up for debate.

Yes, I have, and you are correct about the overall length of the gun. Most of my hunting from a canoe has been with cap locks or unmentionables.
Deer don't even notice a slow-moving canoe, I guess they think is just a log floating down stream.

You make some really nice trade guns Rob, how long is your waiting list now?
Thanks bud . They look better the further away ya get from them !! :D I'm not sure , I think like 15 folks or so ...but , like last time ... I had like 5 folks say ....they had already bought one , they'd changed their mind , they didnt have the $ , one guy was moving to Sweden ( no lie !! ) ... Stuff like that so ....who knows ! :D

Different strokes for different folks. Some of us like them short, light, and handy. My Rosie is only 5 pounds with a 26" 24 gauge barrel, but throws killing patters at 20 yards with 45 grains of ffg Goex and 7/8 oz of shot. Also easy to get though the green briar and multiflower rose thickets around here.
You can say that again light and handy and shoot as good as a36” barrel .👍
