Hi, I want to convert my TC Hawken caplock barrel to flintlock. Sounds an easy fix, only unable to locate the breechplug. Other conversions are much easier with the traditional drum and bolster type systems, TC rifles have that Snail thingy. So, what I need to even begin is the proper breechplug, anyone know where to find one? BF

I was going to convert a NOS flint barrel to percussion for a friend, after I looked into what it involved I sent his sewer pipe barrel off to be rebored and built a flint Renegade out of my new barrel and added an L&R RPL lock.

The lock fit was a nightmare, it was definitely not a drop-in.

I asked the guys here a lot of questions and found out that a breechplug from one TC gun is unlikely to screw in and fit another TC gun without a bunch of fitting and timing.

The barrel threads nor the breech plug threads are indexed on any production rifles that I know of. They start wherever they start and the barrel flats are machined after assembly, as I understand it. I've made a few replacement breechplugs and they can be fitted up in the round, milled down to match the barrel flats within a thousandth or so, and then finished with a file. Certainly not a drop-in operation, but it can be done.

J-Williams is right! I had one that begged to be reworked from perc to flint, and bought a breech plug from Track ... normally i don't find timing a breech plug all that intimidating, but this one will be a bit of a tricky thing, because the flat can't be just the next flat which gets the plug to properly bottom out: you have to make it line up to the correct flat, so the sights are on to and the lugs are on the bottom.

fussy fussy fussy

i thought it was worth the effort, however.

good luck with your project - and remember, we love pictures!

Thanks to all, good advice. Gonna keep the Rice barrel in caplock, especially since my flinter encountered multiple issues in the driving rain today, windy as heck, too. Best to take both guns next time, check the weather and choose my smokepole accordingly. BF

You do not need a new breech plug.
I as well as others on this forum have made this conversion..Do a forum search on (TC change to flint) Topic #243131
