removes grease and oil, electrical contact points cleaner works better, dries faster

That mixture can remove the color of case hardening and cleans as well as straight water. I tryed it back in the 70s with some other miracle mixtures. The carb cleaner is OK on parts that have been removed from the wood then use soapy water. There’s lots of ways to make this sport more expensive and complex.

That recipe has been around for quite a while, I always heard it called Witches Brew. It’s just not necessary and I doubt hydrogen peroxide is good for the barrel. Agree with @Phil Coffins comments on it. And agree with @SDSmlf comment on using carb cleaner. It’s hard to beat the simplicity, safety, and effectiveness of tap water and a drop or 2 of Dawn soap, and the Dawn is optional.

I use chlorinated brake cleaner, doesnt bother blueing or case hardening colors, primarily use it on the lock and it flash dries

You have to be careful with the chemical case coloring some manufacturers are using. It can be ‘washed’ off.

Thanks Gentlemen! Gonna be honest with ya, I've been using commercial black powder bore cleaner and thinking maybe some of this other homemade stuff is better. Looks like hot water and dawn liquid is what I should of been using and will start using with 3 in 1 oil to finish after drying

I have never used anything but water and liquid dish soap. It has never failed me. Any dish soap will do. Why does Dawn always get mentioned when others dish soaps work as well?

Brake cleaner is poisonous, and hydrogen peroxide is corrosive. I'll pass on both. Plain water works well, and has for centuries.

3 in 1 oil to finish after drying

I use 3 in 1 oil but you have to run a couple of alcohol patches before shooting again. Black powder and petroleum products do not play well together. Lately I have been using Barricade in the bore which doesn't need alcohol to shoot it again, just a dry patch. Still use 3 in 1 on all the moving parts lock & trigger.

Because it's under the sink and is easier to spell than Palmolive, and less typing than dish soap?

Hot water and soap for me. If I'm cleaning the bores at the skeet field I use window washer fluid since no water at range.

I spray moose milk on let soak for a couple of minutes, then under the faucet using plain tap water to rinse and wash all the **** away using a brass brush. Go back to my bench and spray moose milk again then follow up with patches till clean and lubed with Ballistol and re assemble. Very fast and simple way to get a squeaky clean pistol every time.

Way to many moons to remember an old friend had a .36 that he didn’t quite clean thoroughly. He went to shoot it and it became an issue during loading. One of the other fellows in camp produced a bottle of hydrogen peroxide from a first aid kit. He stuck a splinter in the touch hole and poured the barrel almost full. After a few minutes ball kinds of crude began boiling out of the muzzle. After the foaming quit, several patches and lubes were applied. The barrel sparkled and loading was smooth. The owner never let it get that bad again.

The MAP mixture I've used for the past 20 years was equal parts of each. I mix 16-oz. Murphy's Oil Soap, 16-oz Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol at least 70%, 91% even better), and 16-oz Hydrogen Peroxide). I mix it in a 48-oz. plastic container with air-tight seal for storage at home. I buy the ingredients in 16-oz sizes so I can just pour them in that 48-oz container and mix them up. I fill a 12-oz. corked glass bottle in my period shooting box for reenactments. When I don't have it handy or the bottle is empty I use......Water!
