I don't think you need to do a complete, detail cleaning, but I would remove the nipple, wipe it off inside and out, wipe out the flash channel in your bolster or drum, and then oil it. I would also wipe the bore with a jag and patch with a little solvent, then a dry patch, and then a greased or oiled patch. Also wipe off and apply surface protectant to the outside of your lock and breech area.

That may be overkill, but it only takes a few minutes and should reduce the risk of corrosion. Even though caps are not as corrosive now as they used to be, popping a cap can burn off and/or blow out at least some of the surface protectant that is in the flash channel and bore down at the breech.

I use LSA as a surface protectant, inside and out, although any good gun oil should work. You want something that won't evaporate. I put it on a pipe cleaner to apply to the various orifices, and on a patch for the bore. I use a piece of chamois (the real thing, not the synthetic) saturated with oil for wiping the outside. The chamois is durable and leaves no lint. I keep it in a small, wide-mouthed jar and add a half-dozen or so drops of oil to it every time I have a cleaning session. It feels greasy to the touch, but is not dripping with oil. It lasts for years.

Best regards,

Notchy Bob
